    Scoter ID, Florida, USA

The shape of the bill and two white patches on the face says Surf Scoter to me

    sea eagles more bad press

I hope I have read this right. Unless the Buzzards in Scotland are bigger than those we have in Japan the man who said that they attack people is very silly, and we have Stellers Sea Eagles and White-tailed Eagles on my parents farm in the winter and neither of them carried me off as a small...

    Western Kentucky Bird at Lake

....... and the very long tail in comparison to other small plovers.

    Dunlin

In the first photograph the bill is too straight and heavy at the base for a long billed Dunlin plus the length of the legs and the overall build are more like a Tringa wader. Not a Dunlin.

Do birders like to be asked questions in hides?

I am a new birdwatcher and it is only through asking questions that I understand what the field guides are talking about sometimes. I had been birdwatching for a couple of months when I met an English birdwatcher here in Japan and he spent the rest of the day helping me with identification and...

    Snowy or Little Egret?

That amount of yellow on the legs is very rare on Little Egret ( although I have only seen them in Japan and UK ) but is what the field guides say for Snowy Egret. The bill colour of the egrets we have here in Japan can be different with each bird so we usually see if other features are right.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

My latest 'lifer' is Gray's Grasshopper Warbler on my family farm her on Hokkaido. I saw it yesterday afternoon as I was doing some birdwatching after work.

Which birds have that bit of extra magic for you?

The returning Stellers Sea Eagles and Japanese Cranes to Hokkaido each winter are my 'magic birds'. This is even better when the either land on my fathers farm or just fly over.

    Dunlin?

I think Dunlin never look as clean and white as the birds in the photograph. I would say they were Calidris alba ( are they called Sanderling in English? )

how many BOPs have you seen

I have only been birdwatching for a year so I have not seen many birds of prey. 1 Stellers Sea Eagle 2 White-tailed Eagle 3 Hen Harrier 4 Eastern Buzzard 5 Northern Sparrowhawk 6 Gyr Falcon All, except White-tailed Eagle and Gyr Falcon, have been seen on my parents farm.

    Desert sparrow?

Hello Yasamin. I am only a beginner to birdwatching too. The bird in the photo looks to have a wrong bill for a sparrow and the wings and tail have thin pale edges which I do not think happen on a sparrow. The bird looks very big as well when you see it next to the cherries. I have looked at...

    Kentucky Crane Hunt Approved

Living in country that protects all Cranes, mainly by Japanese people as government does not involve in much conservation, I am horrified that the USA is allowing this. Why shoot beautiful birds just for fun as the killers will not be eating them even?
