    The gaffer

I am posting this to let anyone who chatted regularly with my husband, The Gaffer, know that he passed away on 22nd June. He was a brave, private man who loved nature. He will be deeply missed.

The Kielder bid of prey centre also offers falconry days as I was bought one for a gift but didn't take it up. Brian

Excellent idea and hopefully we might be able to arrange some volunteers to help. Anyone got any chest waders? It could be as well when we do find who the owners they would allow the lake to be managed properly to further encourage wildlife. An enforced ban on fishing wouldn't go amiss either...

Have you any idea who does own the lake as I had it on good authority that it is the council?

Steve, The pond at Testo's is council owned but the last that I heard there is no fishing club which has the rights to fish there as the council don't want anyone fishing there. I think Lakeside club has been dissolved as the new owner of Lakeside doesn't want anyone fishing the lakes. Most...

Here a link to the save our forests campaign which is aimed at preventing privatisation of our publicly owned forests. Worth signing the petition to protect this vital widlife habitat. http://www.38degrees.org.uk/save-our-forests Brian

I saw this article on the BBC news and thought it worth a mention. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12105157 I have always been interested in the reasons why amphibians and fish fall from the sky but birds are a different matter - they are meant to be in the sky!! I will be following...

I am not surpised, it must have been very rewarding releasing the bird knowing if it had not fallen into capable hands it would probably be dead now. Well done to all concerned:t::t: I think it must be in contention for the story of 2010. Anyone think of any better? Brian

Garden feeders busy again and nice to see three bramblings make a return after being absent for a fews days. Local male sparrowhawk sat on the fence for a short while and interrupted feeding time. Anybody looking for a hangover cure? Brian

Fieldfare present in the garden most of today. It has a hell of an appetite for ASDA's cheapest apples!!! Put two new apples out this morning and they are both gone - poor bird must be starving. Good to see a bit of a thaw releasing a bit of water for the birds to drink. Brian
