Overview

Taiwan is an island also known as T'ai-wan or Formosa, depending on your particular identity.

It lies around 100 miles/160 km off the coast of China to the southeast. It has a landmass that is approximately 245 miles/395 km long and 90 miles/145 km wide at its widest.

Taipei, a northern city, is the seat of government of the Republic of China, which has jurisdiction over it and other islands in the area. [1]
