    bird id please

the coloring and the distinctive white on the wing sounds like sanderling, but the stiff wingbeat and the location say sandpiper.. also the coloring would be more for winter plumage on the SS unless immature birds have the same coloring?

    bird id please

Yes the wingbeats were quite stiff, I noticed that as it flew away that it seemed short and abrupt in flight almost. We are quite a distance from the coast. Our river eventually dumps into the Atlantic, but not near us:) Thanks for the info, and I'll try to get close enough for a photo next...

    Duck ID please

Spent an hour or so watching this female adult and a brood of ducklings swimming around watching us. They were very curious, swimming to within 10 feet of my dog in the water, and then swimming up to shore to feed on the weeds not 6 feet from me on the waters edge. I got my bird guide out, and...

    Birding logs

I want to start keeping a birding log, and was wondering how everyone else goes about setting them up. Is there someplace you can get printed logs to just add your dates to the species or make up your own? If making your own, what is the best way to set it up? Thanks!

Thanks Katy, I came across another of these islands, this one is about 12 miles south of Strachen. Its called Murphy's Islands and is quite a bit smaller than Strachen, but still has a large population of birds and nests upon it. Croil Island is also host to various bird species. This is a...

First Bobolink and Orioles of the year

Was out walking the dog along the roadside when I spotted an odd looking bird black with cream colored back of head and white rump, white on wings. Kind of a bubbling call, identified it as a bobolink, which was what I thought I was before checking ;) Was tickled to see the female as well, but I...

Yes the bird has black eyes, the light spot is a reflection of the flash. I think its courting season for the common grackles. I've been watching the males bringing the females seeds and bits of worm. The females flies around loudly calling and the males come running..LOL
