Thanks to everyone for their nice words on my pics.....and now I am able to get out and about better now I hope to see and record a lot of the day to day goings on here......On Thursday and Friday I met a few really brilliant fellow birders both Male and Female and really enjoyed to hear their enthusiasm for wildlife and the area. LOWER....Friday lunchtime......with Kevin....he used to be on work parties at Upton years ago and was catching up on his birding after a long lay off.

Wigeon
Gadwall
Pair Little Grebe
Buzzard
Sparrowhawk
G.S.Woody
Family 8 Mute Swans.

Lots of banter and potential to be run over.

Last time the family of swans showed up there was only 5 young but glad to say all 6 were here again.....all of a sudden the family came into the water off the bank and then all hell let loose as the 6 young just went mad - as if full of the joys of Autumn - splashing and small pretend flights...think the water is still churning up.

The morning was lovely ..still and quite warm....

...and this Big Grey Bird had a flypast...over the south (Dam) edge of resa and headed towards Lickeys.

The Wigeon were staying well up the far end of Shrub Mill around 1-2 pm today.....while looking a RAVEN could be heard Croaking.....spotted him through the trees on left of Lower and then he came into full view soaring higher and higher.....a bit later heard him again but really high....then another came from the right and they then flew off into the sun.....
Nothing of note at Upper but small birds after the few berries still around.....big groups of Canada and grey Lags on far shore.

Never seen a Robin eat berries before and he had trouble getting one down so stopped and flew off and eat it in secret.

I went over to Bartley the other day and its still a right pain of a place......so hard to get a view of most things....O.K. for long distance spotters but not middle or close up views.

Not been able to visit this week so far but this was reported .....

from Israel on Upton site.......Drake Mandarin on Mill Shrub,Lower Bittell today.

Wonder if its the one that frequents the canal around here.

Popped in around 9.30 at Lower...all I had was a pair of Grey Wagtail on top of hedge...water level had receded a touch.

Returned around 3.40 and the Male Mandarin Duck was on Shrub Mill.....heading past scarecrow boat up to far end....hope to have got pic as light was going fast....will see when get on PC.

Ha ha...when I got the pics on the PC I found my little friend the Female Wood Duck was here as well.....so more evidence that the Mandarin is the one from on the nearby canal.....

Mandarin and partner still on Mill Shrub...at far end so can't get proper I.D. on female.
Pair of Little Grebe on Mill Shrub and also on Lower.
Raven fly over.

Cat and mouse with the Ducks making me keep going down the bridle-path and back to the road many times.
Finally they came towards the road end before the Mandarin Male flew up and over to Lower and I lost it there.....the female Duck (?) stayed at Shrub Mill.

I am pretty sure that the Female Duck is as you thought.- A Female Wood Duck. The white around the nasal I believe is the give away. (Mandarin, Yellow/orange bill with Black nasal).

According to my new Britain`s Birds by Rob Hume & co.

Hope this is of assistance. Great Photos

Richard

As I was unable to get to see the Hen Harrier today due to only having a short pass I was very happy to see the Kingfisher and Goosander.....it was SO calm up on the dam and there were loads of Cormorants,Gulls,Canadas and Greylags in the distance.
Just before the pass ran out about 7 Shovellers flew in - still far away - and a Heron buzzed me.
