I'm wondering if the "sparrow" could be a finch? Could it be an rather displaced Yemen Linnet? Though the pp looks a little short. Unfortunately not the best pics...
 
I think a washed out or underlit (depending on which pic we are talking about) Striolated bunting is the best fit.
