Oh joy of joys, great start to the New Year *not!!!* Hubby knocked binoculars over yesterday whilst we were getting ready to go out for an hour or two by the coast and, as if in slow motion, we watched them bounce down EVERY step to the bottom of the stairs!!!! Needless to say they are TOTALLY snookered and I'm going to have to take them in this weekend to Newcastle to get them sorted.
So I suppose I'm going to be using Neil's bins for a few days/weeks until mine are sorted :storm: I'll 'manage' but I don't find them as comfortable as my own *sigh*

Coulda been worse though.......could have happened in May during peak migration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :eek!:

So...relying on my naked eyes LOL

25: Feral Pigeon

So far, only:
1.Mourning Dove
2.Red-bellied Woodpecker
3.Blue Jay
4.Carolina Chickadee
5.Tufted Tutmouse
6.White-breasted Nuthatch
7.Eurasian Starling
8.Dark-eyed Junco
That's all I can think of.

This morning I birded some areas around my home town, Saint Joseph, Missouri.

64. Great-tailed Grackle, at Saint Joseph's Stockyards
65. Lesser Scaup, on Lake Contrary
66. House Finch, around Lake Contrary
67. Western Meadowlark, around Lake Contrary
68. Winter Wren, at Bluff Woods Conservation Area
69. Golden-crowned Kinglet, at Bluff Woods Conservation Area
70. Hermit Thrush, at Bluff Woods Conservation Area
71. Northern Mockingbird, around Lake Contrary

I added one more owl last night around dusk:

35. Short-eared Owl

I watched a bird bander at the Lab of Ornithology this morning, and while doing so I picked up two new year birds:

36. Northern Flicker
37. Cedar Waxwing

Then this afternoon I took a walk around Beebe Lake on Cornell's campus and added three more:

38. Pileated Woodpecker
39. Red-breasted Nuthatch
40. Hairy Woodpecker.

After Norfolk my totals were 95 but I managed to add another 15 today around the local reserves.

The highlights of those I have seen include:

3 Hen Harrier and three Crane at Stubbs Mill.
4 Barn Owls in two days
5 Waxwings in Cromer
6 Shorelarks & 40 Snow Bunting in Caister.
Golden Pheasant
Water Rail (2 in two days)
Med Gull in Great Yarmouth
Guillemot at Salthouse
Cetti’s Warbler and Lesser and Mealy Redpoll at Brandon Marsh
5 Bearded Tit (3 male & 2 female) at Titchwell
Approx10 Brambling at Santon Downham and the next day about 80 just south of Wells, near Wighton.
40 Twite at Thornham
Hawfinch, Lesser Redpoll and Siskin at Lynford Arboretum
Black Brant at Holkham

The best has to be the 50 plus Woodlark seen at West Tofts, near Lynford Arboretum. They were amongst 100 plus Linnet and it was Lee Evans that put me onto them.

The first total to kick the year off is 110.

I got the Ring Necked today, was showing very well from the path round the back of the oasts, however got rather covered in mud getting to it. I think i may have a go at the Fudge duck if this wind slows up a bit, as i have to rely on cycling there.

Hi Flipper,
Good to hear that there are a couple of young birders coming through in Kent, also good skills on cycling to sites - something I used to do when I was a similar age and couldn't get lifts.
Just in case you weren't aware there is a KOS walk around New Hythe tomorrow, see this thread: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?p=768036#post768036 I'm sure they'll be glad to see a new face and I don't think it will matter if you are not a member - yet ;)

Good luck

As i actually remembered to take a pen & paper today, so i now have a 2007 list ! The hope this year is for 175 which is by bicycle (and walking if i must) and maybe the occasional train if i am too knackered to ride back

.This afternoons couple hours ride around the east Norfolk countryside and a little way along the Norfolk / Suffolk border / nowhere in particular, and a quick look down the beach didn't turn up anything too unusuial i guess, but a nice round 40 did include 6 Cranes in flight (no clues needed as to the location ;) ), 3 Marsh Harriers, 1 Greater-Spotted Woodpecker, a mixed tit flock that also included a few Goldcrest, 2 Little Egrets over Breydon bridge and later on down in the Waveney valley from Somerleyton village, c.2000 Pink-footed Geese overhead which was rather nice

No doubt i missed plenty of common ones too but, well, there you go....

Dropped down to Slimbridge today and added three more.

111. Eurasian White-fronted Gees
112. Little Stint
113. Bewick Swan.

Resisted heading to the coast and did a fifth local day:

95 Siskin
96 Brambling
97 Tawny Owl
98 Curlew
