Mallorca 2018 (7 Viewers)

Biel found a Jack Snipe in Magaluf this morning but generally a quiet day. Hopefully more migrants will arrive with a flourish soon, the bad weather has held things up somewhat.
The salt pans were very quiet indeed today and only the displaying Marsh Harrier kept me awake.
Mike

thanks Steve for the info regarding the Avocets, saved me the trouble of sending the details off.
like Mike find color ringed birds most interesting, i have a file at home full of birds i have found in the UK, mostly gulls from all over Europe, a few waders, swans, and reed bunting.
Hi Patrick, the owl was close to the platform near the beach, but also saw it or a different bird at salbufera a few days later close to the sa roca hide in heavy rain.
shots of a Corn Bunting at Albufereta, Sandwich Terns at Pollenca Beach, and Grey PLover at Salbufera.
Steve.

Arrived back in Yorkshire to snow after a great week in Mallorca and was great to meet and chat to so many knowledgable, friendly and experienced birders over there who were generous with their knowledge sharing. I took nearly 2000 photos ( most of which were not very good) but going to add some on here for people to enjoy / critique / take the micky out of! Later will put some on of some LBJ's which I'm not too sure about but want to consult the Collins and internet to see if I can id to start with.

These are bonellis and subalpine warbler from Mortix, griffon from Cuber and balearic warbler from Boquer.

Thanks Martin. I get an out-of-hours permit every year but you need to take your passport. I haven’t got one yet this year but I assume the same system is in place. Mike

Thanks, I will take my passport tomorrow and that should set me up for the two planned dawn visits.

Thanks a lot to all for your help.

Thanks,

I risked the Central Plain today in the hope of seeing some migrants but nothing much doing. It’s great being out at the moment though with many species of orchid out (a group of German orchid hunters logged over 20 species on walk number 4, Parc Mondrago yesterday) and Hoopoe and Wryneck calling everywhere. It was a perfect 18 degrees with a gentle breeze so it’s great to just walk around the countryside taking in all the scenery.
Just as I was driving off, two super-sleek falcons flashed past, I didn’t get a good look at them but they certainly were not Kestrels so my money would be on Eleanora’s. I see that the first record in 2016 was 30th March for this species which surprised me, they are normally a very late arriver.
A friend just phoned to say that she has never seen so many birds on the salt pans, Colonia Sant Jordi, as she did today. I was there yesterday when it was deadly quiet. You just never know. Mike

Hi All,

Had a fantastic first trip to Mallorca March 29th to April 2nd. Lots of great birds but nothing unusual to report.

I must tot up, but somewhere between 90 and 100 species over the 4.5 days. Highlights included a flukey Black Vulture down to 50m(!), a hard earned Balearic Warbler in the Boquer valley, Temminick's stints, Marsh sandpipers at Salobrar de Campos and s'Albufera, and watching the Corn Buntings along the roadsides (sadly long lost from Ireland).

Must go trough the 1000 or so photos and will post anything worthy.

Can't wait to go back!

Kilian

Hi Kilian, that would be great, especially the Marsh sandpipers which have been so scarce this year.
Glad you had a good time, 100 species is always a realistic target for that time of the year and in only 4.5 days is pretty good.
Mike

The highlights of a brief visit to Cibollar in Albufera this morning were 3 Temminck's stints and a pair of Water rails right in front of the hide. Other than that, the more usual fare with a couple of Ruffs, 5 or 6 Redshanks, a couple Greenshanks, 40 or so Avocets, Common Snipes, Dunlins, a couple Garganeys...

Then on to the very windy Albercutx tower hoping for incoming migrants. A single marsh harrier showed there, gliding very fast across the bay due North.
Then an Egyptian vulture paid a brief visit before flying back to where it came from, the mountains near the Castell del Rei.

Thanks Steve for the information on ringing. It’s really interesting stuff to know where birds have come from. I often see birds with rings so if I post them here is that ok, or shall I send details somewhere else?
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike.
Manolo Suarez ([email protected]) handles all the ringing issues in the Balearics, so ideally any observations of ringed birds should be fowarded to him. That way, any ringed bird sightings are processed quickly through the right channel, so the ringing program gets their valuable information and we then get to post the bird's story on here ;) (as per the Avocets) :t:

Thanks Steve, I have made a note of that.
I am in the UK for a few days but am still getting the birdnews from Mallorca here so I can keep posting. I’m sure the weekend will be better for migration now.
Already a few Woodchats have arrived.
Mike

I noted a woodchat shrike just up from the Habitat Apartments in Port Pollenca on my last morning of birding - the its April. Have also added a purple heron that I saw the day before at La Gola when was having a look for the subalpine warbler.

Good morning!
rigth now at la Gola one male BW Stilt together with a Water Pipit and a cinereocapilla Yellow wagtail.
Lots of Common Swifts, three Barn Swallows, two House Martins and some Chiffchaff. I think today could be a good day for birding in the surroundings.
Regards,
Cristina.

Hi!
A Collared Pratincole at s'Albufereta, in one of the islets of the new pond behind the Hotel.
