White-headed duck

Hello,
This is the second day with no news about the Red-flanked bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus), but the good new is than the White-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) is still at the Bassa de Can Guidet.

Pep. I have seen your fabulous photos of the Starlings gathering at dusk.
Every year a different place seems best. I always go to s’amarador but it’s not always best.
Is there somewhere better?
Lots of people ask me every year but I haven’t been yet this autumn.
Thanks, Mike

Crossbill Salbufereta
Osprey Salbufera, not sure what the fish is, Guilt Head?
Preying Mantis Salbufera
European Pond Turtle/terrapin? salbufera, you can see how small it is by the toe of my size 11.5 shoe at the bottom.
Steve.

Thank you Pep. I can recommend a visit to see the Starlings to all birders who can make it. One million birds is spectacular. They make the most amazing shapes in the sky as they try to avoid the crafty raptors waiting in the wings. Peregrine and Merlín are master hunters and rarely miss. Even the local Marsh harriers have a go but in comparison they look slow and ponderous and they are pretty hopeless at it really. I hope to see you there, it’s a show not to be missed. Mike

Hi Pep, I had a look for the W.H.duck on my way to the airport on Friday morning. I only had binoculars and was viewing through the fence with the sun against me but I couldn’t locate it. Is it over the far side?
Kind regards. Kevin

Just a few more pics of the Red flanked bluetail.

Hi Kevin,
Yesterday it was very windy and it was with the group of common pochards on the side protected from the wind just on the other side shore, impossible to see without scope.

Steve.

The fish may well be a Gilt head [bream] which has been recorded from s'Albufera,
The mantis should be Sphodromantis viridis.
The terrapin looks to be recently hatched.

It’s all gone a bit quiet although I have no doubt there are a few lingerers still around from autumn migration.
No such luck on a sea watch tonight, I have rarely seen it as quiet, just a handful of Balearic shearwaters but nothing else.
I see that a few days ago there were a couple of Waxbills at La Gola. What a delightful little reserve this is and now it’s in the history books as a great site for rarities having turned up some really good birds recently.

Hello! Yes, two of them were seen by Maties Rebassa and Miguel Rodríguez.
I don't know if it is a very good new as they are invasive species, but birds anyway ;)

Regards,
Cristina.

Thanks Cristina. Many visiting birders are keen to see Waxbills so I hope they become regular at La Gola. That would be an added attraction and would bring you many more visitors!
A brief seawatch tonight produced Balearic shearwaters, two Gannet and a Grey Heron far out to sea. A bit strange.

Majorca Sept 2018

Giant African Mantis it is then.
Guess the European pond turtle is common on Majorca.
Will finish of my photos with shots of the 2 Spoonbills from the 28th, gave me a bit of a run around for a few days but eventually caught up with them.
Steve.

Could the waxbills be established? An historic record, I know, but in June 1984 I saw two Black-rumped Waxbills Estrilda troglodytes at Calas de Mallorca.

There are common waxbills at the southern end of the Cami des Polls. I was put onto them by UK birder Marcus Nash, who had seen a small flock there. I’ve seen them there both last and this year, around the sluices and in a nearby orchard - only small numbers (up to three).
