fledgling

  1. First Flights

    First Flights

This is among the first flights of this Peregrine fledgling.
  2. Cool Summer Hang Out

    Cool Summer Hang Out

This little one cries incessantly for its parents to feed her. Eventually the mother turns her back to the fledgling and the little one calms down. Little is a bit of a misnomer in that this fledgling is about the size of the mother, and bigger than the father.
  3. Falconet Ballet

    Falconet Ballet

That caption should be pronouced: "falconeh balleh"
  4. Mastering Wind

    Mastering Wind

This fledgling gave a great show today. This may be the only one of four to have survived (unless the others are in serious hiding).

  6. Ya Big Baby!

    Ya Big Baby!

I was relieved to see this young falcon today--only one out of four left (mortality rate is that only one out of three lives). It is the 10th day of flight so far--about 52 days old. This is the biggest and darkest of the fledglings--probably a female.
  7. Gis a Lift

    Gis a Lift

No. 5 Again, perched on his (her) favourite fork lift truck.
  8. Keeping an Eye on Dem Gulls

Keeping an Eye on Dem Gulls

No. 5 (the runt) of 5 Kestrel fledglings. This forklift appears to provide the young one enough cover from the Herring Gulls patrolling above. This one left the nest far too early, heavilly downed at first but has managed to survive the traffic in & out of the steel fabrication shop (&amp...
  9. Keeping Dry

    Keeping Dry

No.s 2 3 & 4 of 5 Kestrels that recently fledged. Amazingly, their parents nested amongst the noise & hustle-bustle of steel fabrication in extreme proximity to humans.
  10. Canyon Wren feeding time

    Canyon Wren feeding time

As I mentioned, I spent parts of two days following this new family about an abandoned road bed full of boulders. I saw how they foraged, and cared for the chicks, which are fledged at this point. Note how the chick looks the larger, but it's just an illusion.
  11. Canyon Wren chicks

    Canyon Wren chicks

They are fledged but mostly waited for the parents to bring the food. Later, a shot of parent feeding a chick in this same spot. The boulders are sitting on an abandoned road bed in the Columbia Gorge near Hood River, OR. A section of road was replaced in a straighter route for the wind...
  12. Sun's out, oooh - aaaaah

    Sun's out, oooh - aaaaah

Hilarious behaviour more suited to video: One of those cool days last August, the clouds opening up for 30 seconds every 5 minutes......... This little chap emerged from a bush for the brief warmth, while it lasted, then returned immediatley back into the bush. This went on for at least 1/2...
  13. I'm hungry Dad!

    I'm hungry Dad!

One of my favourites from the SV Feeding Station this Summer(cheers MikefromEbbw). There was a Great Spotted WoodPecker only 5 feet above these at the same time..........glad I went for this shot!
  14. Blackbird Fledgling

    Blackbird Fledgling

Newly fledged blackbird chick hiding in the bushes
  15. Feeding time! White-fronted tern and fledgling (Sterna striata)

Feeding time! White-fronted tern and fledgling (Sterna striata)

Feeding time! White-fronted tern and fledgling (Sterna striata). The most common tern in New Zealand (endemic), found on the coast throughout the country. Population falling though, which is of concern.

    The view from my window

    New kid on the block2

My Robin just about to feed it's fledged chick. Sorry about the poor quality pic.The light is VERY bad today. My new IS lens arrived but does not seem to work so I'm using my old lens!
