  1. Curlew Sandpiper

    Curlew Sandpiper

This bird looks to be just coming into breeding plumage, not quite all the way there yet though. My third time to see this species, I will go back in a few weeks and with luck, get photos in the brilliant summer colors!
  2. Pacific Reef Egret on the hunt

Pacific Reef Egret on the hunt

A dark phase bird (they also come in a white model) prowling the tidepools of southern Okinawa.
  3. Japanese Sparrowhawk

    Japanese Sparrowhawk

Thanks to my partner Tom for pointing me in the right direction to find this beautiful little raptor. This is the first time I know of Japanese Sparrowhawks nesting on Okinawa.
  4. Little Tern

    Little Tern

The birding didn't stop once we returned back to Okinawa from Amami, we drove along a few spots in southern Okinawa and found a few more nice birds to top our trip off. Little Terns are usually the first terns to arrive and signal the start of the summer birding season. Rosate & Black-Naped...
  5. Amami Woodcock

    Amami Woodcock

*Attention Opus* Another new bird for the Opus database. This was taken at night and I had to enhance it. The overall browner coloration and the pinkish bare skin behind the eye as well as the choice of habitat and time of year this was found are enough to distinguish this bird apart from the...
  6. Lesser Sand Plover (breeding)

    Lesser Sand Plover (breeding)

Found this handsome guy along one of my favorite stretches of beach for waders. (Mongolian Sand Plover)
  7. Okinawa Robin Female

    Okinawa Robin Female

Here's the partner of the male bird, both of these birds gave great views today. I had promised my guests we would see them today and they didn't dissapoint us and made the day even though it rained all day.
  8. Okinawa Robin Male

    Okinawa Robin Male

Went up to Yambaru today with a German film crew doing a documentary on the wildlife of Japan. Had brief views of the Okinawa Rail, fair views of Pryer's Woodpecker but great views of the Ryukyu Robin as witnessed by this picture.
  9. Zitting Cisticola

    Zitting Cisticola

A.K.A.-Fan-tailed Warbler. Common resident birds here in Okinawa. They're starting their display behavior making long high curved flights singing in flight rather than when perched. Usually the first birds I hear in the morning. Starts my day off nice!
  10. Eastern Black-tailed Godwit

    Eastern Black-tailed Godwit

Uncommon migrant visitors to Okinawa. This one was from last Autumn, looking forward to the start of Spring to see what shows up this year!
  11. Pale Thrush, last of the Mohicans

Pale Thrush, last of the Mohicans

Each December here in Okinawa, we are visited by thousands of Pale Thrushes. For about 3-4 months, they are one of the more common birds on island (Much to the dismay of the resident Blue Rock Thrush and Chinese Bulbul) But they will soon do their dissapearing act and I'm sure in a week or two...
  12. Kingfisher

    Kingfisher

Just a simple ID shot of a Common Kingfisher.
  13. Ryukyu Minivet (Male)

    Ryukyu Minivet (Male)

Went up to the northern forests today, had nice views of the Okinawa Rail and Ryukyu Robin but no time for photos of either, fortunately this handsome chap posed for me. This made the long trek through the bush worth it!
  14. Barn Swallow wetting his whistle

    Barn Swallow wetting his whistle

Used the public restrooms as both a hide and a windblock and took 50 or so shots of these speedy birds as they hawked for insects above the culvert. Caught this one taking a quick sip.
  15. Kestrel with lunch

    Kestrel with lunch

Driving out in the fields of Kin, spotted this female Kestrel standing on the ground, I pulled over and used my truck as cover, managed to get two shots of her before she took off. I didn't realize it when I took the photo, but only after looking at it after I downloaded it that she had just...
  16. Grey Heron with lunch

    Grey Heron with lunch

At first glance, I thought this to be a snake that the heron had caught, after zooming in on several of the shots and noticing the slime dripping, I found the snake to be a freshwater eel. I'm sure it made for a tasty snack for the heron!
  17. Blue Rock Thrush

    Blue Rock Thrush

This guy flew onto the scene when I was doing wide-angle shots of Katsuren Castle in Okinawa. Glad I had the 18-250mm lens mounted on a tripod ! Around here it's rare to catch a shot of one of these in a tree with a nice background.
  18. Ruff, non-breeding plumage

    Ruff, non-breeding plumage

A shot from last fall migration. Nothing special just an ID shot
  19. Forked tongue

    Forked tongue

My birding partner Tom spotted a pair of snakes fall from a low branch of a tree into a drainage culvert. We ran to see them and I got this interesting shot of the tongue colors. Not sure what type of snake it is, but it's not one of the poisonous "Habu" that Okinawa seems to be...
  20. Blue Rock Thrush (female)

    Blue Rock Thrush (female)

This curious bird came just a few feet from my truck, I was looking for Yellow Wagtails but she posed so nicely, I just had to snap a few pics of her.

    Pacific Golden Plover

The majority convinced me this is a Pacific Golden Plover, vice Grey Plover, I submitted in my original post. Hats off to everyone who helped !
  24. White Eye Closeup

    White Eye Closeup

Shooting Cherry Blossoms and the blue sky turned grey so, I opened the camera flash. A White Eye appeared and didn't seem to be bothered, so, I kept on shooting. I used to think this was cruel, but read on a Nature Forum, it's done all the time. Comments ?
  25. Japanese White-Eye 4

    Japanese White-Eye 4
