Just got back from getting the owl. As we had no luck in Shiritoko I was resigned to dipping on it this year but ............. one of the wardens in Akun NP said he'd been seeing one regularly and offered to guide us to the spot. Cracking spotlit views ( but a bit of a hole in my profits. Damn. ). Off to Kyushu tomorrow - at least it'll be a bit warmer.

818 Sandhill Crane
819 Pallas' Gull

The single Sandhill was found among the Crane flock at Arisake, where we heard about the Pallas'. Luckily there were a couple of Saunder's Gull present at the same site so we could spend a lot more time checking out stuff, instead of belting up to Ariake Bay. Tomorrow in Tokyo then back to the UK - BUM.

Nice that you were able to get the owl!

Even though they were not particularly good views, the 'blob' was identifyable ( and enjoyed ) by all the participants.
