Brief comparison berween MHG VS EDG '8X42' (1 Viewer)

Btw, my post from Nikon management confirming which ones are still being made should be somewhere in one of the discussions. Maybe someone can find it better than me. If not Ill find it at home and repost.
Hi Paul,
Are you looking for your post #13 in this thread?

I notice that the 7x42, 8x42 and 10x42 EDG (but not the 8x32) are still listed in the Nikon Vision Co. (Japan) Sports Optics Catalog for 2023-2024. Establishing their global status as of today's date might require more contacts with Nikon UK or Japan.

Thank you Henry.

Thank you Henry.
That still doesn't prove Nikon is still manufacturing the EDG's. That email you posted from Nikon was almost 2 years old, and I am sure things have changed by now. Nikon said they don't make the EDG anymore, and I find it hard to believe they would lie.

I have also contacted several of the Japanese sellers of the EDG on eBay, and they all said they get their inventory from one wholesaler who has an inventory of old stock EDG's. That is probably where Kyoie get their EDG's from.

The EDG wasn't a big seller for Nikon because even though it was a good binocular it was priced almost as high as the top alpha's from the big three Leica, Zeiss and Swarovski and people just didn't want to pay that much for a Nikon because it doesn't have as much snob appeal.

So I bet a wholesaler bought all of Nikon's remaining inventory of EDG's which was probably a boatload and warehoused them, and now they are selling to the retailers who are selling them on eBay.

If you check the S/N on your most recent EDG Binocular, you are going to find out it is several years old because there are no new ones coming off an assembly line.

You have a new message.
Hi Dennis!

Where is the response from Nikon in JAPAN, Nikon USA does not know anything about the decisions made by Nikon Japan, no affiliation.
And yes the EDG is still a fine glass IMO subjective opinion.

You’re talking to Nikonusa, after someone there told me they don’t make the EDG’s anymore, I took it up to management. They told me they are being made but were not available from them and put me in contact with NikonUK who confirmed production. You’re right it was 20 months ago. I did have a follow up sometime in summer of 2023 when a client asked me about it, who then went on to purchase one of them.

I don’t think Nikon optics were ever very big on the other side of the great pond. It was more an American thing with hunters and rifle scopes. It really started to go down hill for Nikon after they abandoned that consumer segment , those people took their business elsewhere

Certainly, you can believe what you want. If it’s really that important to you, you can try to buy one from one of those dealers. As far as serial numbers, you’re not gonna get too far with Nikon giving you any production dates. It took me months and over a dozen communications just to find out what month a late model Nikon EII was made.

No, I am almost buy new or LNIB. I am too much of a perfectionist.
It seems like you had a lot of problems with your new or LNIB EDG’s.
I would really like to see your email from Nikon management confirming that the EDG's are still being manufactured because Nikon denies it, meaning somebody at Nikon is lying, or they are trying to hide the fact that they still make them.
And NikonUsa lying surprises you? That’s funny, they’ve lied to me numerous times. Or maybe we should give then the benefit of the doubt and just chalk it up to representatives not being well trained.
It is mysterious where all these Japanese sellers get their stock of new EDG's that they are continually selling. I have asked a few of them where they get their stock, or if they are selling remaining stock from old production runs.
My opinion is they get their stock from suppliers , who get them from NikonUK and Japan.

None of my posts should have been deleted here. You birding guys are a little "cuckoo" when it comes to your binoculars I think.

I see that none of the half-dozen people I've corresponded with in the last year than have ordered 7x42 EDG post here. I can see why! I guess they're out actually using their non-existent NEW binoculars :) I'm going to go do the same.

You guys enjoy your chat with Dennis now...maybe you can schedule a conference call with Nikon USA this afternoon or something. Enjoy!

Send the S/N into Nikon on your NEW Nikon EDG and have them tell you when it came off the assembly line. It might surprise you that it is not as fresh as you think it is. 😁

So you still think Nikon is manufacturing new EDG's in Japan?

Roughly when was that? I had no idea there had been Nikon rifle scopes because I don't follow such gear, although it does seem that having a "complete" line of sports optics would be an advantage.

Obviously Nikon never manufactured EDGs in the UK, so statements from Nikon Japan would seem to be decisive. When their cameras and lenses go out of production there's normally an announcement.

Nikon hunting optics were big for decades in the states , I had a few rifle scopes over the years and still have one on an old Winchester 30-06. Growing up I’ve seen more Nikon rifle scopes than anything else. I think production stopped about three or four years ago.

Just for clarification my understanding is the EDG’s were always made in Japan, but we’re sold by NikonUK and dealers of course.
