Dr José Maria Cardoso da Silva is a biologist and biogeographer, who is an executive vice-president of Conservation International and a professor at two universities, Universidade Federaldo Amapá (Tropical Diversity) and Universidade Federal do Pará (Zoology). The Universidade Federal do Pará awarded his bachelor's degree (1986), the Universidade de Brasília his master's (1989) and the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, his doctorate (1995), after which he did post-doctoral research at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (1996).
