Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports (6 Viewers)

Jinsihtan Ridge May 29, 2015

I was out checking my camera trap and previewing a field trip location for a class this afternoon when I saw an Oriental Stork flying high and straight south. My previous latest record was the first week of March and the earliest was the last week of September at Laotieshan so I was quite shocked to see one today. I also found an area where at least two pairs of Daurian Redstart are breeding (haven't seen this before here in Jinshitan) and possibly two Dollarbird nesting sites. I plan to go back after lunch with my students and will post again if we go. Unfortunately rain is expected.....

Entrance Road to new Golf Course near the Jinshitan Reservoir June 3, 2015

Had a short but productive trip this morning with my class. Quantity was replaced with quality. We started with a Thick-billed Warbler singing loudly right across from our school gate while boarding the bus. Soon after arriving we heard and then saw a nice Forest Wagtail followed by a brief visit by a Dollarbird and then ended with a Tiger Shrike returning to its nest with prey. I have seen evidence of breeding Tiger Shrike in that area for many years in a row now.

June 18, 2015 Forest area around Tang Dynasty Hot Springs

Was at Tangjiahe in Sichuan with most of my class all of last week so no reporting from Dalian. Tangjiahe is a fantastic place and a wonderful location to spend time at. Big thanks to Robbi who is based in Chengdu for setting it up. Contact me for his information. For a guy who lives on the coast, northwestern Sichuan is definitely not part of the same country :eek!:

Will you or class write something about it? Hoping so!

Gretchen, yes this is coming. I'm swamped with end of year things at the moment and my students are also finishing up here. Will put something together at some point.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds August 5, 2015

I headed out at lunch to see what was around and found a plover that I believed to be a Long-billed. I've only seen Long-billed Plover two times here and so wanted to confirm. Thanks to Paul Holt, also known as Gretzky (Canadian reference), for the confirmation! I headed back out after work and found it in the same place. Lots around for this time of year after almost half of the species the week before. A little cool and rainy here recently.

Jinshitan to Zhuanghe August 8, 2015

I did this route with a friend yesterday. The weather ranged from hard drizzle to beautiful sunshine but was always coolish. While we were north, Jinshitan had a once in a year thunderstorm complete with sheets of rain, lightning that sent people running, backed up storm drains, localized flooding, and wind. I was happy I had closed my windows before leaving! This trip was a bit of a question mark because I had never done it at this time of the year before. It turns out to be a brilliant day with new personal highs of Chinese Egret and Black-faced Spoonbill for me.

Highlights:
Exactly 100 Chinese Egrets (there were more but I was very careful of not counting any twice)
52 Black-faced Spoonbill around the large bridge at Zhuanghe (my previous daily high was 14 I think)
Seeing 6 banded birds: 5 Bar-tailed Godwit and 1 Great Knot that will be recorded in the East Asian Flyway Database.

Jinshitan is back in action! Superb stuff Tom. I had 4 Chinese Egrets in May, my first highest count in Shanghai but that itself sent me drooling for the rest of the season. 100 Egrets will definitely drive me crazy. The Long-billed Plover's bill definitely looks long enough. Good luck for the fall season!

Cracking shot of the Striated Heron Tom!

The Saunders' Gull is also fun - I've never seen one in that spotty juvenile plumage.

Cheers

Country Club August 18, 2015

After seeing plenty of birds on the golf course the day before, I headed out to the Country Club after work yesterday to have a look around. Oriental Cuckoo was the best specie seen during the 1.5 hour walk around. I didn't hear it call but the yellowish wash to the undertail coverts, thickish barring on its chest, contrasting underwing, and smallish size led me to believe it was Oriental, not Eurasian. If anyone is good with cuckoos and sees that I am mistaken, please do speak up. I don't see Oriental very often and struggle with IDing with hearing it call. This was quite different than what I usually see.
