Hello,
Ruby crowned kinglets, a Carolina wren, a female rose breasted grosbeak and most unusually, a yellow throat vireo have turned up. The latter would be a life bird for me. White throated sparrows have now arrived in great numbers.

Hello,
I have had a very bust October, often keeping me from bird watching. So I will try to do a little catchup. Incidentally, autumn, or fall as Americans often call this season, is in full colours.
I had the pleasure to see golden crown kinglets with their crowns in full display and Eastern towhees, a winter wren and a yellow billed cuckoo, a junco and a field sparrow and a song sparrow
.

The past few days have been an autumnal delight. I have seen black capped chickadees, tufted titmice, norther shovel(l)ers, wood ducks, and a brown creeper. I also saw a great blue heron catch a large fish, maybe 17 cm. long. He went out of sight, so I wonder if it was able to eat the fish

Since my last posting I have seen few new birds but I did see a chipping sparrow, fox sparrows, American goldfinches in winter plumage and common grackles. Oddly, I saw the saw the grackles on the pavement, sidewalk, of a residential area near my home.
My recent walks to the Reservoir have yet to reveal any new waterfowl.

Should you wish to visit New York City in the autumn, avoid Marathon weekend, the first Sunday in November, and Thanksgiving Day. Both occasions, and the day before, may have the highest hotel prices. On both days, Central Park visits are restricted, at least from the West Side.

I cannot write that the New Year has not brought much new. At the very end of the year I was surprised to see a hermit thrush and red breasted nuthatch.
However winter bird watching has its rewards. Today, I saw

Buffleheads

Hello,
I am still in the winter doldrums with more bitter weather ahead, with a morning temperature of perhaps-14ºC expected.
I did have two surprises on Thursday. The first surprise was a ruby crowned kinglet, male, clearly displaying its crown.
On my return home, I saw what appears to be a large dog, running across the footpath and into a wooded area. I could see no owner. Then I noticed no leash and no collar. I realised that I had seen a coyote! The Park authorities no longer try to capture and relocate them.

The Jackie Onassis Reservoir in Central Park has potential in the winter, even when it is half frozen over. On Monday, I saw the following there:
American black ducks
Northern shovellers
Mallards,
Hooded Mergansers
Buffleheads and
American coots.
None were new for the season but it was worth my detour.
Today, was fairly typical for the winter:
Northern shovellers
A ring billed gull
White throat sparrows
Tufted titmice
Red tail hawk
Northern cardinals, m., f.
Blue jays
American robins
Black capped chickadee
White breast nuthatch
Fox sparrow and
American goldfinches.
Last night, we had perhaps 40mm of snow:

Hello,
Last week, I did see a snow goose. As it was flocking with Canada geese, I suspect that it was a hybrid. I also sighted a juvenile double crested cormorant.
Today, I saw a brown creeper, but I cannot tell if it was an early migrant or a straggler, which over wintered.
