Griswold’s Vacations 2022 (1 Viewer)

So we left the cottage at 06:00 yesterday morning and got home at 00:30 this morning. I should have planned the return journey better. Traffic was predictably heavy until we reached Glasgow.

So glad we made the effort though. The Uists were a completely relaxed experience. Driving back through the highlands was like IKEA. Rammed given it was a bank holiday week. Every car park around Glencoe and Loch Lomond overflowing.

Ferry journey was very quiet. Highlight being a dark phase Arctic Skua.

I think a week probably isn’t long enough given our journey times. And difficult to do anything about that with our boys in school. With the oldest doing his GCSE’s next year there maybe an opportunity the following year though. The cogs are beginning to whir. ;):ROFLMAO:

Hope you enjoyed the short Outer Hebs write up. We all loved every minute of it. (Except the journey home)

You've had a great trip, have enjoyed the posts ,to be honest 2 weeks isn't long enough either!!!

You’re probably right Paul. I was thinking along the lines of a week on the Uists followed by a week in the Cairngorms. Would only be a short trip (10 hrs) home then. Much more manageable.

Imagine if we still had the old ferries we used to have that connected most of our major ports. You could have gotten on a ferry in Glasgow then relaxed on a journey down to Liverpool and that would cut down on your driving (albeit the journey would take longer).

Lol. From Glasgow the traffic was actually ok John. But still not ok enough to detour to your Lesser Yellowlegs - unfortunately. I might still be on the road now :D

The road down Loch Lomond can often be really busy unfortunately, especially the middle section where it twists and turns. It looks like the bird has gone already so you probably would have been out of luck if you went on that detour!

Yeah we’ve often been caught there John so not unexpected. Unfortunately a motorcycle rider had been in an accident this time so hopefully he was ok. On the outward journey we passed there at 02:00. Had the road all to ourselves. Was actually very nice.

Are you still heading down to Wales in the summer?

Rich

I'm in the same boat as regards being limited by school holidays. I'd happily go for clipping 2 weeks from the summer hols in order to have 2 weeks off each in May & October. Fat chance.

I don't have anything booked yet - other things cropped up but I'll definitely be visiting at some point.

I don't drive anymore, but I know what you mean about having that road to yourself - I experienced it a few times on early morning drives north. The road down from Arrochar to Helensburgh is a great drive too and much quieter than the Loch Lomond road.

Just booked a week in Cornwall for October half-term. Hopefully a lot less time on the road than our recent trip ;) Actually went down yesterday to dip on the Roller and it was pretty straight forward.

Can’t see me doing any sea-watching but might go on Scillonian with the youngest. I’ve got a copy of Best Birdwatching Sites in Cornwall and Scilly but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve always found that any days except Saturday are ok for travelling. Things just seem to bottle neck near each resort on Saturdays.

Cheers Owen. The owner has just asked if we can go Friday to Friday instead of Saturday to Saturday. Happy to do so in all honesty.

Yup, would agree, although it depends on time of day. Did the uni run last weekend to pick daughter up from Plymouth & left Yorkshire at 6 am. With a stop for breakfast we were in Plymouth for about 1. However, coming back north we left about 11 & by the time we hit the M5 going north was a car park.
