comparisons of 2-4cy caspian/michas

5 new pics here: http://lou.bertalan.de/birds/
old pics actually of the nice february 2008 in herastrau park, seen by cristian. they show both species in each of the pics; even though they are not the best quality the individual birds and their behaviour on ice are breathtaking.

A 2cy michahellis with asymmetrical mirrors on P10.

goodness.. a monster! it looks like a 2cy indeed, advanced in all respects, especially mirrors! or possibly a retarded 3cy but there aren't white primary tips! i'll come back to this. quite some anomalies in it!

it sure is. and it shows the strange assymetric p10 very well: right wing with a round mirror and a short white tongue (which should be much smaller or absent in a 2cy YLG) and the absolut weird underside to left side p10 with a conspicous white tongue connected to an aberrant long mirror for any of these age classes (2cy shouldn't have a mirror at all so it got to be 3cy). i know this 'thayeri' pattern from adult caspians but never from a younger bird - this one is not even 4cy!

edit: i just realized that the 1cy is a weirdo too, very advanced for a 1cy - seems to have 3rd gen scapulars(??), most coverts and upper tertials are 2nd gen. and inner wing shows a strong venetian blind pattern. do you have more pics of this, cristian? i would like to see if rectrices have been renewed also.

thanks for sharing!

i have wondered about a hybrid, cristian, but even for caspian the p10 pattern (left wing) would aberrant for this age. going only on the wing pattern i'd say:
right wing = 2cy caspian
left wing = merely a 3cy caspian without p9 mirror but a 'thayeri' p10...

edit: did you see the white tipped right p4? visible here: http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=231718&d=1260183382
and here: http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=231714&d=1260183275

but the bird is not a caspian! it could be a cachinellis though...
