Hanging Basket (1 Viewer)

Hello All,
I have a nest in my hanging basket since spring. The birds have had 3 babies. 2 the first time and 1 the second. The baby is still in the nest. I would like to take my hanging pot down since it is dead. However, I did purchase a morning dove bird box that I can hang on the wall right next to the hanging pot. Once the baby has left the nest can I just move the nest over to the bird box? Will they know that that's their new home??

Hi, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group.

I have to disagree with kits on this one; once the fledgling has completely left the nest and it is no longer in use you can move it. Whether the doves will use it or not is an open question. If the hanging planter is gone the might.

Lisa - I meant that the birds won’t know where the old nest has gone. They won’t have a clue it’s been put in a box. I would imagine they would not be happy to use a nest box which has an old nest in it as they won’t know where it came from.

Hi robyn and a warm welcome from me too. By all means remove the hanging basket when this youngster has fledged. We live and learn... I didn't know there were nest boxes made for Mourning Doves LOL I think it's up to you if you want to put the old nest material in the box, it will give them a start if they want to use it. You just have to hope they like the nest box!

Good luck, please let us know what happens next.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I hope to hear about all the birds you see when out and about.
