A morning in the Caroni Rice Fields yielded:
222. Glossy Ibis
223. Pectoral Sandpiper
224. Stilt Sandpiper
225. White-cheeked Pintail
226. Masked Yellowthroat

A thoroughly enjoyable outing.

Shorebirds are starting to slowly trickle in, thus ending the "summer doldrums." Today I added three birds to my Year List, bringing it up to 412.

410. Black-crowned Night Heron
411. Pectoral Sandpiper
412. Least Sandpiper

In addition to the birds listed above, I added Common Moorhen to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists, both of which are now at 221. (I had seen the species in Honduras last March).

I have not seen either of the night-herons in Missouri this year. I am hoping for one or both tomorrow up at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

Denver Area

Early July added:
194. N. Bobwhite (Attwater Refuge nr. Houston)

A day around Denver was disappointing overall but added the following:

Rocky Mountain Arsenal
195. Canada Goose
196. Eared Grebe
197. Swainson's Hawk
198. Lark Sparrow
199. Western Meadowlark

Chatfield State Park
200. Western Wood-Pewee
201. Lesser Goldfinch
202. Yellow Warbler
203. Black-capped Chickadee
204. California Gull

Roxborough State Park
205. Western Scrub Jay
206. Spotted Towhee
207.Broad-tailed Hummingbird.

Nice countryside around Denver but not great for birding this time of year, at least compared with southeast Texas. Seven hours of intensive birding produced only 37 species and perhaps 150 individuals. I was surprised by the scarcity of hawks, the total absence of vultures and the small range/numbers of wading and water birds; for example, I saw only two egrets (both Snowy) and one heron (Great Blue).

230 Arctic Skua
Spurn 28/07
231 Pied Flycatcher
Spurn 28/07
232 Pomarine Skua
Spurn 31/07
233 Goshawk
Wykeham Forest 01/08 - 5 juvs playing around

Tough birding today. I slogged through waist-high, thick grasses and sedge in a wet, muddy, swampy area in rubber chest-high waders in 90-degree heat. However, it was worth it in that I got a year tick, bringing my Year List up to 413.

413. American Bittern

In addition to the bittern, I added Little Blue Heron to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists, both of which are now up to 223. (I had seen Little Blue Heron in Honduras in March).

Dave

Got back from a fortnight in Arizona at the weekend; my year list is now at 557, and my ABA life list at 412!
