Current total is:

6 Ciconiidae (Must have miscounted?)
12 Threskiornithidae
23 Ardeidae

Since I posted this I was able to add Glossy Ibis, but lost Eastern Great Egret to the recent IOC lump. Also managed to add Great White Heron, but it is not included in the count.

Might be able to add a couple of more species this summer if my grants come through and I get to visit NZ and Australia this summer

how many herons, egrets and bitterns have you seen?

6 Ciconiidae (Must have miscounted?)
12 Threskiornithidae

Not Herons, Egrets or Bitterns, neither is Hammerkop.

54 herons- there are some very difficult herons but it more or less possible to see them all; the hardest (and I've seen none of them) include White-bellied Heron, Japanese Night-heron, White-eared Night-heron and now Shrenck's Bittern. I don't know any reliable sites for the last one.

cheers, a
There used to be a regular bird in a small pond at Danum Valley but it wasn't there in 2000 when I was.

So my missing species are
Greater Adjutant, Milky, Abdim’s, Oriental and Jabiru Storks
Black-faced Spoonbill
Madagascar Sacred, Black-headed, Red-named, White-shouldered, Giant, Southern Bald, Asian Crested, Olive, Dwarf, Spot-breasted, Wattled, Plumbeous, Sharp-tailed, Green, Bare-faced and Scarlet Ibises
Forest, Australasian, Pinnated, Stripe-backed, Least, Australian Little, Schrenk’s and Cinnamon Bitterns
White-crested Tiger, Agami, Zigzag and White-bellied Herons
White-eared, Japanese and Malay Night Herons
Chinese Egret

I live in Hong Kong and spent three years in the UK.

It was a great relief for me to twitch a Schrenck's Bittern a few weeks ago. This, along with Black Bittern, has become much rarer in Hong Kong than before.

Anyway, my current ticks are as follows:

Yellow Bittern (HK)
Schrenck's Bittern (HK)
Cinnamon Bittern (HK)
Grey Heron (HK, UK)
Purple Heron (HK, UK)
Great Egret (HK, UK)
Intermediate Egret (HK)
Chinese Egret (HK)
Little Egret (HK, UK)
Western Reef-Heron (UAE)
Pacific Reef-Heron (HK)
Cattle Egret (HK, UK)
Squacco Heron (UK)
Chinese Pond Heron (HK)
Striated Heron (HK)
Black-crowned Night-Heron (HK)
Japanese Night-Heron (HK)
