54 herons- there are some very difficult herons but it more or less possible to see them all; the hardest (and I've seen none of them) include White-bellied Heron, Japanese Night-heron, White-eared Night-heron and now Shrenck's Bittern. I don't know any reliable sites for the last one.

Agree with that - I've always loved bitterns (big and small) but never liked egrets (and there are very few birds I don't like!) - they're just so....obvious!

I was going to have a pop at egrets too Alan, but had a change of heart at the last minute, as I must be getting soft . Enjoyed finally sorting out Chinese E though. You're a hard man if that was'nt a "positive egret moment" for you too?

I'm afraid to say (but honest enough!) that I just had to google it to refresh myself on what one looks like, but that is one absolutely gorgeous bird.

Mind you even Intermediate Egret is one I've always fancied in Britain after the Italian record, and one of the few birds I'd be tempted to find any way to twitch
