Image stabilizer noise (1 Viewer)

I've just obtained my first stabilized lens and I've noticed that it makes an unpleasant grinding/whining noise for about 5 seconds after I press the shutter release/focus button. Is this usual?

The winding down can also be a help if you suddenly need to take another shot. Also it will start to (and keep whirring) if you hold the shutter button halfpressed.

Mine depend on the IS (or OS) as to noise:
Canon f/4 IS - noisy (with clunks and an occasional mild screech stop)
Canon 100-400mm IS - pretty quiet
Sigma 150-500mm OS - very noisy (but at +4 stops I'm not complaining!)

My Canon 300 f4 is also stupidly noisy with clicks. It is quite offputting if you have used another IS lense which is quieter. The system on the 70-200 f4 is barely noticeable.

I guess that I am lucky. Both my 70-200mm f4 and 500mm lenses have very nice manners as far as IS noise. Hardly noticeable, especially the 500mm.
