June Moths (1 Viewer)

Highlights amongst last night's pretty standard fare were a none-more-iconic Buff Tip new for the year and an Ingrailed Clay, which is a tick. Also nice to get a Treble Lines in half decent nick, all mine to date have been pretty ropey.

No doubt over the ID I'm sure but the nearest fit, illustration to this form in Waring, doesn't illustrate the very bright, gold, infill to the kidney mark?

There is a close match on Norfolk Moths (the one taken 21/06/2012 by Dave Appleton at Bswdswell)

First mothing night this year when the temperature stayed in double figures, 10.6C was the lowest. 27 moths of 13 species.

Edinburgh Pug = 10
Nut-tree Tussock = 3
All the others were new for the year
Common Pug = 3
Broken-barred Carpet = 1
Red-green Carpet = 1
Brimstone Moth = 1
Bordered White = 1
Pale Prominent = 2
Brown Rustic = 1
Rustic Shoulder-knot = 1
Pale-shouldered Brocade = 1
Twenty-plumed moth = 1
Eudonia lacustrata = 1

04/06. 43 of 22 species. Lifer was a May Highflyer (surprised to have never seen that before). NFY - Common Pug and Pebble Hook-tip.

05/06. An outing to North Herts with friend (failed to find Four Spotted) but another lifer Cydia nigricana Pea Moth, trapped with pheromone NIG. Several Silver Y and Mother Shipton (nfy) flying. Plus other small micros and a Plume (Stenoptilia type).

Much better last night, best 'tickless' night so far with four NFY, Poplar Grey, Elephant Hawkmoth, Spectacle and a Coronet and a Large Lacewing for added interest.

A good night last night with 6 NFY: Knot Grass, Shears, Angle Shades (one of my favourites), Coronet, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Cabbage Moth.

Numbers:

Buff Tip 3
Heart and Dart 6
Treble Lines 8
Shuttle-shaped Dart 6

Annoying moth of the day was the Knot Grass, which zipped off before I photographed it, but it won't be the last this year.

John

Walking around my patch this morning saw:

Common Carpet
Several grass moths (probably Chrysoteuchia culmella)
Alabonia geoffrella
Esperia sulphurella
Eulia ministrana

Half a dozen additions to the year list this morning, the ever crowd-pleasing Elephant Hawk, Mottled Pug, Poplar Grey, Pale Mottled Willow, Common Rustic agg & Square-spot Rustic. Also a possible tick Grey Pine Carpet, over on the ID subforum, but still unsure.

I think this is a Small Clouded Brindle?

Another half deecent night, another Poplar Grey, another Coronet and two, NFY with Buff Ermine and Pale Tussock.

Two NFY for me also, The Miller and Poplar Lutestring, from 12 spp altogether.

Numerous:

Heart and Dart 12
Vines Rustic 3
Treble Lines 11
Shuttle-shaped Dart 7

Decent enough night. Another Poplar Hawk-moth was a fairly dark individual.

John

Edit: 3 NFY, Orange Footman that I had to ID from photo, sorry, forgot. JD

Catch up, spent a lot of weekend in field too. What is sleep?

05/06. 49 of 26 species. Mostly the same old with only NFY 1 Brown Silver-line.

06/06. 72 of 35 species. Two lifers Lychnis and Teleiodes luculella. Garden tick Great Oak Beauty (Herts rare). NFY - Brown House Moth, Middle-barred Minor, White Point and Triple-barred Argent. 4 micro to get gen dets on.
All my good garden moths are brown or grey - deeply envious of those who have Puss Moths or Eyed Hawks. One day.
