Yesterday I saw a male kestrel repeatedly catching dragonflies in short flights from a fence post - successfully caught them both on the wing and on the ground. He even mantled over one of them! Neither I or the others in the hide had ever seen a kestrel hunting dragonflies before. Is this unusual or have we just been unobservant?

they are very adaptive. they are known to catch insects on the wing and also flush out small birds like a sparrowhawk.
