Attached now, a study of a juvenile Great northern diver, sketched yesterday with the aid of a telescope in small lake close to Munich..Note the unusually extended tip of its upper mandible...The first time I`ve seen such a bird in life and not easy at all to sketch it..I had to follow it all the time with the scope and wait a lot because it was diving all the time ...

It sounds like the zoo is the place to get up close and do some detailed studies. Is this the case, and get practice. Do you use other equipment / techniques when out in the field?
