Paul's 2024 World List (2 Viewers)

Paul Chapman

Well-known member
My goals for this year are as follows:-

1. Get my 2023 world photo list completed. Lots of processing to do & photos to upload to eBird. 1,800+ species photographed in the end this year;

2. Get an up to date world list into eBird with at least one photo of each species that I have photographed to the end of 2023;

3. Get a British & Irish moth list input into BUBO - a moth life list is long overdue for me - too many random spreadsheets etc;

4. Add 50 moths to my British & Irish moth list - rather dependent on getting the life list sorted;

5. Record my world bird & Britain & Ireland moth lists throughout the entire year - eBird & BUBO;

6. Record over 1,500 bird species during the year;

7. Photograph over 500 new bird species worldwide in 2024 - this should be possible with the trips planned but some trips need to be firmed up; &

8. Spend more time in the field moth trapping - a poor year in 2023 for me with maybe a dozen nights - so a minimum of twenty nights targeted including recording on some of my previous local sites to update recording.

So this will be my attempt at the sixth target which is to record 1,500 bird species during the year. That will be a stretch on current planned trips but it stands a chance of being in the ballpark if all the trips happen & I arrange another one or two....

All the best

I popped up to Rodborough Common today and added:-

102 - Waxwing

Other than that, I have been around the patch seeing a few bits but not additions.

Pics - Rock Pipit. Black-necked Grebe (*5), linnet (*2), Snipe (thermal & normal), Kingfisher, Little Egret, Redwing & Waxwing (*2).

The last pic are my first two Waxwings on my grandparents' roof in winter 1981/2. I was photographing them whilst perched on top of a wall which would no longer hold my weight. :)

A trip to the football today yielded:-

103 - Ring-necked Parakeet (Slough Sewage Works, M4, Berkshire)

Patch birding has continued on Thursday and Friday with pics of Common Sandpiper, Cormorant, Grey Wagtail, Cattle Egret, Dunlin, Great White Egret, Lapwing, Peregrine & Goosander.

On Thursday, I recorded Cattle, Little & Great White Egret on my patch on the same day for the first time with 4 Cattle Egret. Cattle is still a rare bird for us and Great White Egret pretty unusual so all three in 30 mins was an exceptional outcome.

All the best

Since 21st January, the patch Great White Egret has remained around & a patch Red Kite was nice but no year ticks until today:-

107 - Spotless Starling - Lisbon Airport, Portugal
108 - Brown-necked Raven - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
109 - Whimbrel - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
110 - Cape Verde Sparrow - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
111 - Cape Verde Swift - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
112 - Western Reef Heron - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
113 - Osprey - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
114 - Bar-tailed Godwit - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
115 - Brown Booby - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
116 - Ring-necked Duck - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
117 - Black-winged Stilt - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
118 - Kentish Plover - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
119 - Wood Sandpiper - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
120 - Green Sandpiper - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
121 - Lesser Yellowlegs - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
122 - Greenshank - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
123 - Ruff - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
124 - Sanderling --Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
125 - Spectacled Warbler - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
126 - Common Waxbill - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde

I took a couple of pics so maybe a back of camera or two later. I have been to Cape Verde before so no lifers expected and this is mainly a holiday with a couple of friends. But one possible lifer to target later albeit an unlikely one.

Pics - Whimbrel, Pintail, Ring-necked Duck, Bar-tailed Godwit, Lesser Yellowlegs with Wood Sandpiper, Glossy Ibis, Kestrel (Neglected Kestrel), Osprey, Brown Booby, Wood Sanpiper with Redshank, Sanderling, Kentish Plover with Sanderling, Ruff & Greenshank.

A whole 9 Cape Verde ticks taking my Cape Verde to a massive 68 species from 5 islands. I had 59 species on my 2013 trip.

All the best

Paul

A few additions today. We did a return ferry crossing to Santo Antao before more pottering on Sao Vicente. A find of Hudsonian Whimbrel is apparently a 7th for Cape Verde but a subspecies on eBird/Clements.

131 - Arctic Skua - Santo Antao ferry, Cape Verde
132 - Fea's Petrel - Santo Antao ferry, Cape Verde
133 - Little Stint - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
134 - Purple Heron - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
(Hudsonian Whimbrel - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde)

A few pics - Neglected Kestrel, Spectacled Warbler, Spoonbills, Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Lesser Yellowlegs (two pics), Little Stint, Green Sandpiper, Cape Verde Sparrow, Ring-necked Duck (three pics), Pintail, Purple Heron, Kentish Plover, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Red-billed Tropicbird, Osprey & Fea's Petrel.

All the best

Two year ticks this morning:-
135 - Night Heron - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde
136 - Little Ringed Plover - Sao Vicente, Cape Verde

We have now arrived in the north of Santo Antao for 6 days with the aim of seawatching for Black-capped Petrel.... Let's hope we have some luck!

A few pics from today - Ringed Plover (5 pics - no guesses for what I was looking for...), Great White Egret (2 pics - no guesses for what I was checking for...), Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-winged Stilt, Little Stint, Common Sandpiper, Night Heron, Moorhen (2 pics - no guesses for what I was checking for...) & Little Ringed Plover.

All the best

Paul

Doesn't count without a pic ...

... ;-) Nice one.

You now have 5 days with nothing to do?! What's the status in the WP - as you say you were targeting - is this now a known site or a known individual ???

As you can imagine, I will be trying!

Peter Stronach unlocked the key to this search last year & he has been very kind with assistance:-
