We are being guided by "Jay" (Wich'yanan Limparungpatthanakij):-

He is the co-author of The Birds of Thailand - a walking encyclopaedia of taxonomy, subspecies, identification features, etc - as well as being an exceptional field birder with remarkable hearing and knowledge of vocalisations and great company. We were guided by him on a short trip in November 2022 and organised this as a follow up trip at the time.

It is certainly a country that is fine for independent travel with really good information out there but we wanted to cram as much into the trip and maximise our results. We have bumped into a few tour groups and also independent travellers at the same sites seeing most of the same birds but it really is a massive advantage if for instance you want to find and learn the attached Chinese Leaf Warbler.

In addition to the median crown stripe & pale rump (less contrasting than Pallas's), identification features include the straighter greater median covert bar without a contrasting darker shadow & the smaller bill. It was confirmed on call.

All the best

Paul

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, Paul, enjoy the remainder of the trip.

Is it just you doing the trip Paul?

Two of us. A friend I have travelled with throughout retirement so far. It has worked well.

Jay is like having a walking interactive audio book. Definitely an upgraded second edition as well of a book with superb detail already. For instance, the Buff-chested Babbler above is likely to be lost into Rusty-fronted Babbler following unpublished (as yet) DNA analysis but he really rates the potential split of the Black-billed & Yellow-billed Blue Whistling Thrushes on habitat & vocalisations as well as sympatric breeding....

All the best

Paul
