A couple of nice adult Med Gulls hanging around in Arbroath just now, on the sea-front beside Jumping Joeys. ( used to be the bowling alley for the old-timers ! )
Other highlights are greenshank, green sandpiper, a whimbrel, kingfisher and Ruddy Shelduck at Montrose Basin, seen from the Lurgies.

took the dog and went up Glas Maol in Glenshee early this morning. Found 3 dotterel, 12 Golden plover, 2 Raven, 1 Ring Ouzel, plenty wheatear, Meadow pipits and Mountain hares.
2 large covies of Red Grouse on the way down but no sign of ptarmigan today.

The Little Ringed Plover was quite obliging at Vane Farm yesterday. I saw it distantly from the semi-circular bench on the Heritage Trail looking back towards the shore where the camera is. Quite pale, so maybe a young bird. There was a Green Sandpiper nearby.

Later it was visible for a long time from the Carden Hide hunting on the opposite side of the Flood before flying off westward. I did wonder if there might be two of them.

Took the train up to Montrose basin this morning to try and see the Ruddy Shelduck, and Little Egret that have been reported there recently. Snapped a few Common and Sandwich Terns, plus a small flock of overflying Goosanders from the bridge en route to the Wildlife Centre.
Once I got into the Center, I managed to pick up the Ruddy Shelducks through a scope. Distant but easily recognisable. No sign of the Little Egret at that point though. Searching again later, I did manage to find it, despite a bit of heat haze. 2 new birds for the year (The Ruddies were a lifer too). Also a single Canada Goose out on the basin.
Also managed to pick up a Whimbrel from the bridge at the railway station, feeding on the shoreline just at the north end of the station.

there was 9 gannets heading north flying quite close ,3 of them juvs, lots of swallows in the glens and a couple of small groups of linnets

Yeah... I'm right jealous of that Jay.

One of my visits there, I'd just put the screen up and a Jay popped down onto the table, turned round, saw me and scarpered. I'd not even had time to sit down!

This forenoon at The Lurgies, Montrose Basin - Common Crane, Little Egret, Canada Goose and Kingfisher.
Also about 10 Greenshanks, but I couldn't find any Green or Common Sandpipers.

Pleasent day out in Fife. Ring-neck duck and NARD still at Angle Park. 2 Ruff, 18 Greenshank, Golden Plover, 2 ospreys and 5 Whimbrel on the Eden. A seawatch at Fife Ness was quiet but still had a pale pom, a close sooty, 4 Arctic Skuas, 2 Bonxies and 20 Manx.

It was quite exciting at Montrose today. Best things were good close views of the Common Crane (here's a very record shot) and Little Egret. Missed out on the Ruddy Shelduck, unfortunately. Other highlights were Black-tailed Godwit, Tree Sparrow, Linnet, Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, Spotted Flycatcher and Whitethroat.

The exciting bit came when we were approaching the bridge at the end of the Lurgies. When a herd of cattle came running towards us. We soon realised they were being led by a bull, and an angry, aggressive bull at that. We were able to nip through a fence into the adjacent wheatfield and stood still while it brayed and snorted and pawed the ground at us. Eventually it moved past and we were able to carry on. Though we stayed behind the fence till we reached the bridge.

But the worst part of the day was when we stopped for a coffee at Pictavia. I had a florentine (wheat-free) but found that it was made with corn flakes! Ptui!

An hour or two at Fife Ness in the sun this afternoon for a bit of sea-watching with StAndrewsBirder. Started well with a dark-phase Arctic Skua relatively close in. Lots of Gannets, probably just as many Kittiwakes, double figures of Sandwich Terns, Fulmars, and 3 Bonxies. Couple of groups of Manx Shearwaters seen too. A flock of 25 Whimbrel circled overhead at one point before heading off to the south.

StAndrewsBirder spoke to a few of the guys scoping from the Fife Bird Club hide and they apparently had a few Sooty Shearwaters and a Pomarine Skua, as well as a lot more Manxies than us.
