A Black Tern and a Little Gull photographed near Arbroath harbour two days ago

Arbroath has been inundated with Little Gulls lately. Black Terns have been fairly regular (had 2 together by the harbour, and another off Victoria Park recently). Roseate Tern has also turned up. (All pics from the past couple of weeks). Arbroath can be really good around August/September with lots of terns, Med & Little Gulls, a decent chance of Curlew Sandpiper etc and Skuas marauding offshore.

A coup[le of decades ago, I had a passage of 250+ Little Gulls at this time of year at Arbroath, seen from the top of the ramp opposite the Cliffs Car Park.

i visited morton lochs last monday and noticed they have cut away all the plants/flowers on the path leading to the railway hide it is now completely bare,they could have left it for another week or two,the only butterfly seen was a speckled wood which was a lifer for me there was also a bat flying at the same spot,somebody posted a pic of 12 little egrets taking flight after a female marsh harrier flew over last week,there were 2 egrets on show this week

First Redwings of the winter at Scone Palace on Saturday, plus Nuthatch and Sparrowhawk.

Saw my first Nuthatch of the season at the new feeders on the edge of town today.

Long-tailed Tits came back last week too.

Didn't know Dippers sang
Took a walk up the Ericht this afternoon to a wee quiet spot for a sit down and a picnic, only to find a Dipper already in residence and obviously very happy with the spot, it moved onto a rock maybe twenty feet away and stood singing at us for quite some time before setting about hunting and feeding again, didn't fancy the sandwiches then.
What a gorgeous song they have! It sat on that rock singing to us for ages before moving upstream a bit to carry on feeding. Looked like a fresh water crayfish at one point?


I got a good video of it hunting but had the sound off on the camera so, no song to hear

My favourite species Scoz!! And yes, their song is truly beautiful!!!

There's quite a few Dipper territories along the river... where abouts were you?

Morning @delia todd we go to this wee pool above a weir next to the remains of one of the mills, not much left of it though. Lornty

Dippers are lovely birds aren't they? Fairly accepting of humans and really obliging for photos. Loads of really nice fungi there too, hoping for a glimpse of an otter in the area

Do you park in a car park on the Balmoral Road and cross a wee bridge.... or park in town and walk from there?

The Lornty link shows you where on G maps. Yea, park in town down by the river and walk up, I love all the mill ruins as well as the river, trees and wildlife

My recent birding around Dundee has been rather productive in addition to my vis-migging sessions at Riverside Nature Park (see the RNP thread) with a Hawfinch seen in Caird Park, and a very productive visit to Balmossie which resulted in a Mediterranean Gull, a very unexpected Puffin and a late Arctic Tern among other things. Initially reported on Sunday afternoon, and was still there this morning (given the weather today probably wondering to itself "what am I doing here?").

I had a very expensive visit to the feeders on the edge of town.

The usual species around, Great, Blue, Coal and Long-tailed Tits, Robin, Chaffinch. All waiting for the feeders to be filled. Then my first sighting of the winter of a Great Spotted Woodpecker, just wouldn't settle long enough for a picture though. Then a Nuthatch - such a pretty addition to the local sightings.

Then we had plans to go further up the road and start another feeding station but the car wouldn't start. It cycled through all sorts of weird faults... faulty brakes, steering wheel not locked, oh and some others which I can't remember. So ended up calling the AA (and used What 3 Words for the first time!).

I'd got a dead battery, not just flat.... but useless!!! So a new battery was required.... 150 quid!!! Nice guys though LOL.

thats technology for you delia,years ago you would get plenty warning your battery was on its way out dim lights/horn not sounding loud enough now the battery just dies on you leaving you stranded

Just remembered, one of the many error messages said something like "low battery, start the engine"! But.....
