Upton Warren (14 Viewers)

thanks Bri THERE WAS NEVER ANY DOUBT:t:

I don't doubt that either ;)

Hope it sticks around for a while.

Late summer post breeding dispersal has produced a few of the more recent Worcs records, but for how much longer remains to be seen. See one while you can. Tragically, this species and Turtle Dove are on their way out of Worcs and like the very last Cirl Buntings nearly 40 years ago, we may not get them back.

Hi Brian - do you have any details on the number of records of Willow Tit in the county in recent years? The latest WMBC report (2010 - 2011 due out soon??) lists just 4 records for that year, including 2 from the Grimley area.

Moors yesterday

Popped into the Moors yesterday lunchtime for a wander round - but it was too humid & sticky to hang around for long!!

Did catch these two youngsters though - think the juv. bluey was looking for some shade!! ;)

Willow Tit at Upton Warren

An updated account take from The Birds of Upton Warren opus:

This rather solitary species was formerly an uncommon bird on the reserve, usually recorded in ones and twos around the Moors Pool and most reliably seen in autumn and winter. One of the most infuriating species recorded at Upton Warren, Willow Tit could be present for long periods during one winter and then fail to show the following year. Unfortunately since the early 2000s the species has been very rare at Upton Warren (and in Worcestershire as a whole), in line with the 80% decline in the national population experienced between 1974 and 1999.

The Moors Pool feeding station used to be the usual location for this species, where it appeared far more timid than other members of the tit family; otherwise most reports related to birds in mixed tit flocks, particularly along the River Salwarpe. The historic peak in the reserve's recorded history came in the mid 1980s when there were at least five birds present in 1986 (a figure repeated again between late August and October 1993). One pair bred on the reserve in 1985, possibly in 1986, in 1990 when at least two young were raised along the River Salwarpe and finally in 1993 when three juveniles were seen in the Education Reserve in early June. In 1994 a young family were taken by a Great Spotted Woodpecker (the last breeding attempt on the reserve) although the pair probably was successful later in the general locality as a juvenile bird was seen that August. The loss of Willow Tit as a breeding species has resulted in records since usually only occurring in the autumn on passage and as wintering birds. Whilst single birds have been most been the subject of most reports in since the mid 1990s, a pair was seen on several dates in the Education Reserve during 1998 and 1999 although breeding was not proven. In 2001 a bird that had frequented the Moors feeding station during the winter (first noted on the 17th September 2000) remained present on site until early August before moving on, unable to attract a mate. In 2003 a pair was noted on both the 5th May and 23rd July but no breeding activity observed with one then virtually ever-present from late July to early September 2003 at the Moors Pool with potentially a different bird frequently noted at the Flashes for a fortnight from the end of July. Since this series of records in 2003 there have been only three documented sightings:

- One present at the Moors Pool feeding station for a week from 29th September 2004
- One on the east side of the Moors Pool on the 14th November 2004
- One on the 2nd April 2006 (not mentioned in the reserve's annual report but include in the WMBC's annual report)

Despite several reports since the species was promoted to a County rarity in 2007 - some submitted to the County Recorder; others not - there have been no accepted records of Willow Tit at Upton Warren since 2006.
