Good to see Curlew numbers creeping up further.

John - usual question regarding duplication of birds across both sides of the reserve:

Gadwall - 7 Moors Pool + 1 Flashes = 8?
Oystercatcher - 3 Moors Pool + 1 Flashes = 4?
Little Egret - 2 Moors Pool + 3 Flashes = 5?

Gadwall 2 makes at Flashes arrived late on so 2prs and 3 males total 7.
little egret 2 flew into Flashes from Moors so only 3 in total
Oyc 3 at Moors .later just a pair and a single at Flashes total 3.:t:

Monitoring the nest boxes at the Moors: an appeal

We hope this year to give a full report on the 35+ nest boxes at the Moors, the North Moors and along the Salwarpe. As it is very easy for us to miss birds coming and going at the boxes we are appealing to UW birders to report any tell-tale activity indicating breeding and feeding. For obvious reasons we would not want that information posted on this forum but if you see Bob Potter, John Belsey or me around the reserve you can let us know what you have observed and where; alternatively I would be very happy to receive a PM.

Many thanks,

Peter
Peter we could also put 'hole guards ' over the entrances asap

Is the Barn Owl seen from the hide nearest the sailing club? Just joined so will take a trip there.

No Main Avocet hide. If it's raining there is a good chance you won't see it. Best conditions are no wind and cool. The bird appears late (5.35pm yesterday) I think probably because there are too many buzzards and magpies around .

Late news: possible Whooper Swan on the Sailing Pool with 2 Mute Swans on the afternoon of 1st February (David Giles via WorcesterBirding)

Work on North Moors next week

Last January 2015 extensive work was carried out in the North Moors. Channels and scrapes were created. This coming Tuesday some tweaking will take place on the east side. This will involve digging out a small section of high ground along the eastern edge of the reed bed. The result will mean that there will be a broad deep continuous channel from the east screen along the east side to where the proposed new hide will be.
Pics
1. the area to be dug out. Crofty is there to give some scale of the job.
2. the view south from the to be dug area.
3. view along the north section of the channel back to the to be dug area.
4. the view looking from the south section of channel
