Very busy at the bird feeder today! (2 Viewers)

Well done with the Siskin RICHAT :t: Superb bird to have visit

Here are a few images of some of this morning Redpolls, of the original 6 birds, 3 have since returned. eb, not the best but its a bit dull outside, I hope for a bit of sunshine while they are around.

Intrestingly one is ringed :t: images not good enough or near enough the see anymore detail on the band, would be great to know where it was ringed.

No visits form either of the Nuthatches for nearly 2 weeks now, I guess they will be off making their territories somewhere....

Dave

Well done with the redpolls Dave.

Have yet to see one here yet, but had lots the previous 2 Winters. They started appearing about this time last year, so I'm keeping an eye out

Our House Finches (and a couple of House Sparrows) were looking quite dazed yesterday because Chipping Sparrows have started arriving in numbers in our yards. There were about a dozen when I got home after work. No doubt more will turn up soon, as well as some other of our winter residents.

There are lots of Pine Siskins in our area now although I haven't spotted any yet. But I did see my first-of-season American Goldfinches in a local park.

We were had well over 20 Goldfinches in the garden this morning.
This is a record for us.
16 or so in one tree with another 5 in another tree.
The seed feeders are filled with sun flower seeds, sadly I was unable to capture the event on camera.
Hopefully this will be repeated at the weekend, this time I will be ready with the camera.

Keep an eye in those flocks as I have had Redpolls mixed in with them over the last few days. This morning 14 Goldfinch & 2 Redpolls all trying to get to the feeder.

Just want Siskins in with the Greenfinch now, and you never know Bramblings in with the Chaffinch:king:

This morning a lone parakeet was back, this time moving on from the peanuts to the sunflower heart feeder. Bizarre, surreal, almost ridiculous but beautiful.

Have any of you guys had experience of greater species diversity on tubular seed feeders depending on whether or not you have fitted trays or new style perches? I'm always looking to get more species such as chaffinches (or mainly bramblings when they're around) on these feeders. I've always fitted my Droll Yankee tube feeders with special trays. They are designed to take up spillage thereby making less mess, and to help to attract a larger variety of species. My experience with the accessory trays is that I get more chaffinches (and bramblings when available) but also a hell of a lot more collared doves, large birds which hoover up most of my expensive sunflower hearts.

On another thread there's been talk of alternative perches for tubular feeders which allow birds to perch facing the feeders and which give them extra vision, apparently preferable to chaffinches and greenfinches. Droll Yankee for example sell perch rod plastic fittings for this purpose, my experience of these is that they easily fall off or are displaced by clumsy doves. So I've just splashed out on a Droll Yankee Onyx 4-port Easy Clean seed feeder to replace my 18 year old DY A6 classic feeder. The new feeder has "extra comfort perches with choice of landing areas to attract more species" to quote from the supplier. Which is hopefully just as well as I'm reluctant to splash out more money for a specialised tray for this feeder as the old Droll Yankee trays won't fit the new Onyx models. I'm happy for the doves to mop up the spillage onto the lawn if I get more species other than doves on the feeder.

Sorry if this is off-topic but thought this a fascinating topic and hoped you guys may have input/opinions.

Meanwhile still awaiting the first Winter brambling and redpoll here.

Hello Richat

I Have 2 Large Squirrel Busting Feeders With Perches At The Bottom That You Can Fit A Ring Joining Them Together To. Nearly All The Birds Go On Without Any Problems But It Goes Down And Shuts Off The Food With The Weight Of The Birds. The Heavier The Birds The Sooner It Goes Down. It Stopped The Jackdaws Demolishing The Food Every Day But Also Stopped The Doves Going On. Ihave Had A Brambling And Redpolls And Nuthatches All On. I Did Have The Ones Where They Can Perch Facing At It Was Good But The Jackdaws Emptied Them Everyday.

Hi Spinneygal,
Thanks for that information. I've seen those weight adjustable squirrel buster feeders advertised and they are expensive but I guess they more than pay for themselves by making the bird seed go further as it only becomes available to smaller birds. I've complained elsewhere on these forums how most of my bird seed money ends up inside collared doves.

So have your jackdaws and doves now learned not to attempt feeding on them or do they still pester and try?

I still think the habitat and whats in the feeders and the positioning of the feeders are the most critical things and if birds are in your area they will come whatever. its just then a question of what suits your pockets or needs
.
My feeders are a mish-mash of mainly cheap plastic things which can leave a mess when they are abused by the Starlings, Jackdaws and Squirrels, I gave up worrying about them along time ago :-O but the nyger feeder cost be a small fortune and the mess is zero and it attracts the top customers..... Redpolls :t:

I do get a little miffed when the feral pigeons come and take all the seed that I put down for the Housesparrows but I would be wasting my time trying to keep them at bay as they sit on the roof laughing down at me :-O

CC..... you already know me too well mate, but I often wonder what the neighbours make of it all.... I do get alot of the images from the comfort of the kitchen though.

missed this Richat..... is it an escapee or as CB suggests the Ring Necked anyway get it ticked ;) you know I would :-O

Yes ring-necked parakeets. In fact a pair returned this afternoon on the peanut basket. Who knows, in a few weeks from now I may have stopped complaining about collared doves and moaning instead about flocks noisy large green birds:eat: Right now they are a refreshing sight.
