Hi everyone. I'll be visiting the Algarve in July for a 'family' holiday (aka I'll be birding as much as I can) what's the best way to keep abreast of anything special birding wise while there. For instance Mallorca has a group chat on Birdforum run yearly for people visiting call Mallorca 2024 in which anything interesting is posted which is current. Anything like this I could reference for the Algarve or maybe a Facebook group even that anyone knows of?

following.

I'll be in the Alentejo (just North of the Algarve) in July.
It's a family holiday and I'll mainly be at the Atlantic coast, so I won't go birding besides the occasional walk or maybe 1-2 dedicated mornings (and some night birding).
I don't have any targets but will be targeting steppe birds + Spanish Imperial Eagle E of Castro Verde, Red-necked Nightjar around our accomodation and Alpine accentor on Cabo Sao Vicente.

If I would have been closer, I would have included wetlands S of Faro.

As it's July, I don't expect much in terms of rarities or even migrating birds, so I wouldn't count too much on it, even if you find a good source of information with latest sightings.

thank you temmie. I will be in Faro mid april. probably best time but i wont' be with my birding friends on that portion of the trip. birding friends come mid may and i'm free again in June. Maybe the alentejo is a good place to go. except by that time we will have finished the northern route of the camino.

There's a FB group called Rare Birds Algarve. For the common stuff I strongly suggest the little books by Goncalo Elias.
There are also bird guides who can take you out for a day. 🐦

I'm sure you'll have a great holiday. No Alpine Accentors in July though.

The alentejo is an amazing place for black winged kite, if you take any walk near the cost you will easily spot them. Especially the north of Vila nova de Milfontes. Nice trip, I will be there in august too.

Hi
I am visiting the Algarve at the end of August and wondering if anyone can recommend any birding pelagic trips?
I am away with my wife and grandson so birding will be limited and thought a boat trip might be a good option.
Any help is appreciated.
Mick

There are plenty of boat trips operators that do whale and dolphin trips during which you will see birds but birds aren't the focus. There are inshore trips in Rio Formosa that specialise in birding but you are not going to get true offshore birds. A couple of companies do offer "out to sea" birding trips.

Perhaps not suitable for OP, but perhaps interesting for budget oriented folks who are not afraid to do a bit of walking:
I flew to Faro last year very cheaply with a budget airline, then walked with my backpack from the airport to the cheap Municipal campsite on the beach (bus from the airport goes only halfway there so I just walked all the way. It's not far). From there you can access wonderful birding areas on foot. (If applicable, leave wife and kids on the beach). Get up before sunrise and bird this wonderful area for a couple of days. This makes a nice cheap short trip and you can see tons of birds.

Just to let everyone know I have gone and come back from the Algarve and already started making my birding videos detailing my visit there...
