WAITING FOR TRINOVID 7x42 BN (3 Viewers)

I reckon early to mid April. I'm anticipating a further interim update from Customer Care, once mine have been inspected, at which point I'll be told the estimated cost of the work.

In the meantime, I spent several hours birding with a pair of 'green jacketed' 8x42 Trinovid BA's yesterday afternoon...😍
We are in the same boat Bentley, im waiting for an update from Leica CS about the 7x42 BN and also for an update from the vendor of the 8x42 i bought which had haze on the objective lenses.

In the meantime, i spent several hours birding with two pairs of “green jacketed” 7x42 FL and Habicht 10x40 yesterdays afternoon…

What a lovely pair! 😍

These are my BA's...

Wonderful, they look like new 😍
Are the sleeves black or green?
As far as i know there are 3 green versions (maybe more):
1. completely green (also the metal parts and sleeves)
2. green armour, green sleeves, black metal
3. green armor and black metal and black sleeves
When I acquired them, they appeared unused since being serviced and having a new green jacket fitted (the little red service tag was still attached to one of the strap lugs). Internally, the binoculars are perfectly clean and the outer lens glass is free of any scratches/marks, so to all intents and purposes, they are as good as new. They were a lucky find! The only (very) slight negative is the focus wheel movement, which has the tiniest amount of play when switching direction of turn, and it's not the smoothest focus movement. But, in use, I'm now unaware of it's character, it's not a problem. Oh, and the view! 😍

I've yet to find out the year of manufacture, I'll fire an email across to Leica Customer Care this morning maybe, but they fall into the third category on your list. The serial number begins 1103xxx.

So, i just received the repair estimate…including both necessary and additional/recommended repairs.
Bottom line: E 354,74 for necessary repairs and shipping (which sounds like a fair price) and an extra E 319,96 for additional repairs (new eyepiece and objective lenses). Will decide later this week, what do you guys think? The scratch on the ocular was very small and I didn’t see damage on the objective lenses. I bought the Trinnie for E 300,-.

Difficult decision, there is quite definitely an element of 'ouch' to have all the work completed, but I agree that the price for the necessary work is fair enough.

So, the question is, will you love your Trinnies any less if you just get the essential repair work and change of aesthetic done, or will you forever regret not getting those lenses replaced as well? 🤔

Difficult, because I suspect you will benefit little from getting the lenses replaced, but will it play games in your head if you don't...?

Maybe a glass of wine is needed to focus the mind. 🍷

I'd be asking about leaving the objective alone and doing the eyepiece and ocular repairs.

Leica should be paying attention and bring them back, maybe as a BA/BN+ series.
This reminds me that I don't recall having seen a good comparison between the current Trinovid "HD" and BN. Is anyone in a position to offer this?

Until recently I never realized BAs were available in this "olive" green, and I've still never seen one, and wonder whether they were sold in the US. I'm quite surprised that Leica still has OG available as replacement armor. Perhaps it will match these eyecups.

Interesting thread this. I know a very good birder who uses the old bn's exclusively, top bloke and a very accomplished ornithologist. Usually gets the reserve record or within a couple of it every year for my local rspb place - no scope necessary.

Does anyone have a view on how these compare to the pre HD original ultravids? Quite tempted by the black leather ones due to the light weight when carrying a scope as well but would be buying blind due to distance from the seller.

Will

Sipping Orval beer and contemplating my friend 🧠

Yes I compared them.
To my eyes, a good 'clean optics' BN is superior to the new Trinovid on a side by side, or I would have bought the Trinovid.
There is nothing wrong with the Trinovid, but I just couldn't get excited about the view. Good but not 'special'.
The BN was much better.... and surprisingly close to the Ultravids.
But i prefer the ergonomics of the old BN's over the Ultras, so bought 'em!

Any thoughts on how CA is with the old BA/BN compared to modern Trinovids?

I would go for the whole nine yards.

Go for it @Thotmosis, if you didn't, most likely you will regret it down the road.

Life is short, might as well have the best.

Edit: 700 Euros is a fair amount of money to have your BN's repaired, you are facing a tough decision.
