The bird that got me involved in conservation over 40 years ago.
Found a small breeding colony on local farmland while walking.
Adopted the area as my local patch eventually buying a house as close as possible.
Slowly and painfully along with a small group of like minded people managed to get the area turned into a nature reserve. This is now owned by the RSPB.
Still my iconic bird and so look forward to them returning each spring then watching the trials and tribulations of the breeding season.
For a bird which blew me away it would have to be going eye to eye with a great grey owl. Just felt like it could see into my soul.
