Last butterfly of 2020 (1 Viewer)

After 3 exceptionally wet days ventured up to Ruislip today when the sun started to appear. saw a couple of Speckled Woods & briefly caught site of 2 vanessids flying at tree top height. Sighting being brief & appearing as silhouettes didn't get a positive ID, but suspect Red Admiral.

Also saw a male Vapourer in flight & more dragonflies with a smart male Southern Hawker & at least a dozen Common Darters.

Not been a Clouded Yellow or Painted Lady year this one particularly, so that's a nice one.

Small (ish) White in the garden briefly this afternoon - not pinned down to species.

Despite rather bad weather, I had Red Admiral, Small White, Small Copper and a surprise Queen of Spain Fritillary on my German local patch on Saturday, Brimstone on Sunday.

Large White and Small Tortoiseshell (latter on ragwort flower) in the front garden during a short spell of sunshine this morning. 2 Peacock out in the countryside this afternoon, despite the overcast conditions.

Red Admiral at Boddam near the South end of Mainland Shetland this afternoon, basking in the sun on a warm rock in a drystone wall below a garden with a Long-eared Owl sitting in the open in a pine tree.

Would happily swap the two Peacocks ... for the Long-eared Owl (or your current location ;) )

Today -

Large White and Small White both egg-laying on our brassicas (grrr!), Speckled Wood briefly on the back fence (first in garden since the summer) and a Red Admiral flying around infrequently. Looks like the Small Tortoiseshell of the other day has come to an unfortunate end - a freshly wrapped one in a spider's web by the front door. A Hummingbird Hawk-moth too briefly in both the front and back garden.

Windy, day of sunshine and showers.

The butterfly season is almost over here, certainly we are in the final days (never seen a butterfly on the wing in November), but seven species in the last couple of days ...a bunch of Queen of Spain Fritillaries, a couple of Small Coppers, a few Small Whites, singles of Brimstone, Comma, Red Admiral and Peacock.

What's the general weather and temperatures been for you there recently Jos?

Was 22C and sunny last weekend, unseasonably warm. About 15 C today. Forecast for next days is mixed, not cold, but mostly cloudy ... doubts about butterflies lasting till November 🙂

Interesting little thread. My brother takes a keen interest in butterflies, and as such I now notice them more. October 6th had Comma in the local cemetery when taking the little one out in the pram for afternoon sleep, and large white on the allotment. I certainly live the life.

Same here at 1,000m asl in the Alps, a nice mini - spell of 2 warm days before a cold snap tomorrow, a Red Admiral and a Clouded Yellow both heading south yesterday.

A warm morning here in Bulgaria yesterday yielded Red Admiral, Small Copper, Green-veined White, Brown Argus, Small Heath, Painted Lady and at least half a dozen Clouded Yellows.
