Mallorca 2013 (2 Viewers)

hi all,
no news on the harrier, will get on to the photos as soon as I can down load them, no where near as many as last year as everything seemed very elusive. glad someone else saw the bittern martin, unfortunately didn't manage a photo as it was just too quick for me.
Steve.

You can see by the comments how uncommon they are. Hopefully there will be more sightings of your bird.

I didn't manage to see the one on my London patch but did have two Jack Snipe, which was nice.

Martin

I saw two separate Great Bitterns (perhaps the same bird) in flight over Sa Roca reedbeds, S'Albufera 22 April 2013. I hadn't realised they were so scarce, assuming they were a breeding species.

majorca 2013

a few shot of the pallid harrier?
Steve.

Hi James

An even more interesting record. That would have been just after I had been there.

Perhaps I should have spent more time in the hides!

I wonder how many more birds, not just Bitterns, go unreported, or only mentioned in trip reports. I'll do some searching.

Best wishes

Martin

Dark trailing edge to primaries, in-complete dark boa and light collar ..

As Mike said, a very good record.

Bittern used to breed but I believe that none have been heard booming there in recent years.

Martin

Apparently one Bittern was heard booming on 12 May 2012 and the Parc director has confirmed that booming was heard that spring - but none were heard in 2013 (so assumed not to have bred) .

Martin

thanks mick/martin.
a few shots of ruff and cattle egrets.
Steve.

Hello. I think this harrier is a juvenil Montagu's, too.
Some nice rarities these days in Cabrera: 1 little bunting (Emberiza pusilla), 1 common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), and 7 (!!) y-b warblers (Phylloscopus inornatus), plus 2 more y-b in Mallorca (in Bóquer valley and Cala de Sant Vicenç).

a few shot of cattle egrets from sa Roca hide and serin at boquer valley.
