Young Birder (1 Viewer)

Aye! It's for Simeon's 18th. Never been on a pelagic before so any tips greatly appreciated, eg. when/where to go :t:
Sorry for the late reply.
I know Dave Parker gave you the Cornwall birding link but if you want it again: http://www.cornwall-birding.co.uk/pelagics/
Here is a good trip report from last years: http://www.swopticsphoto.com/2009/08/st-ives-pelagic-on-hms-freestone.html
the one i was on we had, 2 Wilson's Petrel, c.30 European Storms, Gannets, Fulmars, many gulls and 3 Manx shearwater . More Shearwaters and Terns were seen on the first few pelagic's.
I don't know when is the best time to do but I assume when the winds are right for seawatching from St.ives Island then it should be ok for a pelagic, thats no help if you book in advance tho.
Im going to do 2 this year, one in July and one in late August/September

There have been 2 girls in the past, dunno what happened to Little Egret...

Thanks Ash, our targets are Great Shearwater and Wilson's Petrel, and to get decent views of Cory's Shearwater, Storm Petrel and Leach's Petrel.

Hi James i have been lucky enough to have been on 3 pelagics from Penzance , all on the Scillion , these are the times of year i went on and weather conditions and highlights of what i saw , hope this gives you some idea of what to expect : :t:

31 st july : light westerly wind sea calm : Corys shearwater 1 , sooty shearwater 10, Storm Petrel 25+ , Sabines Gull 1 adult summer , i had a poor view of a Wilsons Petrel but did not count it as i could not be certain of the id .

10 th August : overcast light wind sea calm : Wilsons Petrel 2 ( great views this time ) Storm Petrel 250 + , Great Skua 25 + , Sabines Gull 2 adult summers ,plus Pilot Whales 6 , Harbour Porpoise 1 and Common Dolphin 3

16th August : wind force 3 sea slightly choppy : Wilsons Petrel 2 , Storm Petrel 200 + , Great Shearwater 5 ( great views , 3 birds following the boat at times ) , Sabines Gull 3 adult summers , plus Bottle nosed dolphin 25 + , Common Dolphin 4 + and Sunfish 4.
i guess its down to right weather conditions and being lucky on the day :t::t:

Wow, big differences there :smoke: I don't think the Scillonian is running anymore, but that was our original plan. Fantastic atmosphere as well I'd imagine. Is later better? I thought end of August/early Spetember was the best time, but it looks like you always went earlier than that.

Yeah the atmosphere was electric when the top birds were showing , um as for time of year , to be honest i am no expert but i found the later pelagic on the 16 th was more rewarding than the others , maybe checking out last years records might give you a more up to date idea , the pelagics i went on were about 10 years ago :t:

Hello, I'm new in the forum and i'm a young birder too. I'm 13.
My life list is about 215 birds observed in Spain, Germany, Scotland and sweden.
As I'm from Spain (Barcelona) I'll probably do a lot of misspellings. Don't be afraid of correcting me. It's like birding, you don't learn alone.
Best greetings, Nico

Welcome to the forum Halcon. Great life list and out of interest would you like to join in a yearlist 2010 challenge that allot of the people on this thread are taking part in:t:

And anyone else on this thread for that matter. Always good to have more competition

Hi Alex and Nico, the ranks are swelling :p. Yet to add anything to my yearlist recently, I won't be a broken record and go on about "getting out" but I did see a nuthatch investigating a potential nest hole in a local park with the only other interest being a young looking female blackbird with no tail feathers. Primaries and all other feathers looked to be fine which gave the bird a very weird stubby look in flight. The only tail feathers to speak of were some wispy curled feathers on the rump which looked almost like the curled feathers of a mallard.
