well firstly they go to places in groups, in order to share body heat,
this is when we get records of 60 wrens in one nest box.
small birds will find a nice hole and all cram in together, starlings take over whole structures,
larger birds fit in where they can that has a bit of shelter, though again usually in communal roosts.
