Unknown raptor (falcon of some kind?) - Cairngorms, Scotland

Didn't see anything but the cloud came down shortly after this photo was taking removing any chance of spotting the bird again or seeing anything else. There were four ptarmigan not far away right alongside the path but nothing else spotted.

Unknown raptor (falcon of some kind?) - Cairngorms, Scotland

Thank you :t: Haven't seen any peregrines recently so maybe I've just became a bit unfamiliar with them! Hope this one stays safe, unfortunately it was in grouse shooting territory :(

Unknown raptor (falcon of some kind?) - Cairngorms, Scotland

It could have been bigger, I'm not very good at judging sizes and there was nothing to compare the size too coupled with not great visibility. I thought the wings looked a bit long for a peregrine but there are peregrines around there.

Unknown raptor (falcon of some kind?) - Cairngorms, Scotland

Firstly, I'm amazed that I remembered my log-on because it has been so long since I've been on these forums! But anyway, stuck with this bird spotted on the way up Glas Maol in the Glenshee area of the Cairngorms and I'm hoping someone can tell me what I saw because I can't make up my mind...

    Guess what I saw!

I was fortunate that this one flew right next to the car so I could get a good look otherwise I'd have been left wondering whether it was or wasn't! Peewit - I'll certainly be keeping an eye out in the future!

    Guess what I saw!

A merlin! I've had to look in my bird book to be sure but I'm now pretty sure it was a female merlin. I went around the corner in my on the way back from one of the glens and this bird jumped up out of the grass verge at the side of the road flying away from the car (she was carrying a small...

    A sting in the tail!

That's an expensive beehouse and I'm sure a lot of people won't be able to afford that (I certainly couldn't!). Providing a home for bees is only part of the solution also, cutting down on pesticides and ensuring there are plenty of bee-friendly flowers is just as important (and cheaper!).

    Insect shortage?

Well the nest has since been partially pulled down. Whether a rat or something got up there I don't know... It could just be they aren't a good pair, the pair that attempted to nest there last year also ended up getting no where and I have to say the male was far from having nice long...

    Insect shortage?

Is it me or does there seem to be a shortage of insects right now? We had a pair of swallows nesting in the shed but it looks as if their nest has now been abandoned and I've seen what I think is one of the pair trying to fly into the woodland bit for food. There are normally loads of midges...

    Baby Announcement

Yup, they need the heat they have a hot spot of around 35-38C but being a desert species are fine at higher temperatures and during the heatwave last year (remember when we had summer?) the temperature under the sand soared to over 40C :eek!: That was without heating too (got too hot for the...
