    Dorset birding

On our annual visit to Brownsea yesterday had superb views of a Roseate Tern on the Sandwich Terns' island in the lagoon.

    Dorset birding

Saw a first for me yesterday in Studland Bay - two velvet scoters. It was well worth going out on a pretty horrible morning.

Has the wet summer altered any of our summer birds habits?

The nightjars seem to be doing well here, my brother counted at least 6 birds singing a couple of weeks ago on Canford Heath in Poole. Normally we hear 3 maximum, so perhaps the damp weather's been good for the bugs.

Thanks for that. It would be great if it was one of the "missing" youngsters from Rutland.

Spider Id East Devon False Widow? which one?

Strangely, I've just spent the day googling spiders after finding a similar one in our porch today. I'd also be interested in any replies you get. We're both certainly living in the right area to find false widows, so I'm keeping my fingers well out of the way - their bite packs a punch...

    Osprey migration UK

We had a superb view of an osprey flying over Poole harbour today. It was wonderful but completely unexpected, as I thought ospreys don't leave us until September. Does anyone know if this is unusual? Was it a non-breeder returning early?

    Autumn migration ~ UK

Last week there were around 30+ black tailed godwits back on the marsh in Holes Bay, Poole. I suppose that means autumn's just round the corner, but I'm still waiting for summer!

    Spring migration

Lots of firsts this week: common sandpiper, swifts, housemartin, lesser whitethroat, sedge warblers and an army of reedwarblers at Radipole today, garden warbler at Upton House yesterday and wheatear at Chapmans Pool on Sunday.

    The Ladybird thread

Please help identify this ladybird While walking on the Purbecks overlooking the sea on Sunday we came across so many ladybirds as well as flies and bugs. On one tiny patch of elder were 5 or 6 different species of ladybird, three of which I photographed (not very well, sorry)...

    Dorset birding

We stopped off at Hatch Pond today en route to the supermarket, and no sign of the bittern, although the great crested grebes have young and there's a cetti lurking. Arne's always worth a visit - we saw a pied flycatcher in the oak wood behind the farm last week and there's Middlebere on the...

    pied flycatcher

Saw my first yesterday, at Arne in the oaks. Sadly he wasn't singing.

    blackcap

We spent the weekend visiting some woods and heard our first blackcap on Sunday and first willow warbler on monday. We were 'chiffchaffed' all the way round and had a picnic while being serenaded by a blackcap, chiffchaff, robin and two song thrushes. I love spring!

    Great Crested Grebes

Now you mention it, the only time I've seen one fly was last week when one appeared to take umbrage at a cormorant and chased it across a pond. It flew very low to the water and only for a short distance before disappearing into the reeds. It wasn't a particularly graceful flight, but neither...

    Brimstones out in force!

The commas seem to be out in force - I found one today at Durlston near Swanage and another peacock. I hope the weather stays kind to them.

    Simon Barnes on Chiffchaffs

Smashing piece by Simon Barnes. I too think of chiffchaffs as the heralds of spring. Suddenly they're everywhere, I even got caught in the middle right old battle between two today, chasing each other round me and the trees. Spring has definitely sprung.

    Brimstones out in force!

First brimstone seen yesterday along with a peacock and a very tatty red admiral at Middlebere near Wareham, while being serenaded by a chiffchaff. Spring has definitely arrived!

    Humming-bird Hawk

Dorset seems to be blessed. There have been a couple of sightings in January. http://www.dorsetbutterflies.com/specials.htm

When is the start of the Dragonfly season in UK ?

In 2003 we saw a large red damselfly on 5th April on the marshes at Wareham in Dorset. According to my dragonfly and damsel book, they don't appear until late April, but this was on the south coast and it was a warm day.

    Smack in the face

Not a hit, but walking round a corner I came eyeball to eyeball with a sparrowhawk intent on chasing something. It veered off at the last moment, but I still have nightmares about those eyes.

    Red Admirals in January?

While out walking around Lytchett Bay today we spotted a Red Admiral and saw another in our back garden a couple of hours later along with a 7 spotted ladybird. What a weird winter.

Grossest thing you've seen a bird do

Hubby was riding his bike through some country lanes and collided with a hen pheasant. Daft birds, why do they dip down after flying over a hedge? The metal brake lever pierced her belly and hubby had to fight to control the bike. Although I wasn't there to see it, I did witness the aftermath...

    Too close for comfort

That's interesting, I only saw my first hornet last year, this year I've seen four, including the three today. When I googled hornets, all the sites stated that they were rare in the UK and confined to the south of England, but there was precious little information about them. Perhaps they're...
