One of our main targets during the trip was the California Condor, which was nearly extinct and is now coming back slowly as a species. We were very lucky and saw three resting in a tree on the highway. They are massive and much bigger than the very common Turkey Vulture.

Big Sur
166. California Condor (New Lifer)
167. Chestnut-backed Chickadee (New Lifer)
Great Northern Diver
168. California Gull
169. Great Blue Heron

I am now very close to seeing 171 birds this year, which is my best ever performance, achieved in 2004 when I lived in Namibia.

World life list: 387 (Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Big Sur, CA, USA, October 2014)
US life list: 110 (Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Big Sur, CA, USA, October 2014)

My last day in California and I only needed three more year birds to make it my best year ever, since hitting 171 in 2004!

Big Sur
170. American Kestrel (New Lifer)
171. Caspian Tern (New Lifer)
172. Lesser Yellowlegs (New Lifer)
173. California Quail (New Lifer)

Very happy with the result, seeing 46 birds: 19 lifers, 21 first time in the US and 31 new birds for the year.

I then spent 3 days in Washington DC for work and saw no new birds, as I've been there already twice this year and the selection is rather limited (at least for me.)

World life list: 391 (California Quail, Big Sur, CA, USA, October 2014)
US life list: 114 (California Quail, Big Sur, CA, USA, October 2014)
2014 year list: 173 (California Quail, Big Sur, CA, USA, October 2014)

Was very impressed by all the elegant Red Kites - a lifer for me! This species has been reintroduced here and is doing really well. Saw 19 species, including Buzzards and lots of other more common birds.

Another day, another Christmas meal. Today in the township of Skjetten, 20 km outside of Oslo.

Outside, where it was very cold, I spotted a medium sized Woodpecker in the tree up above full of Blue Tits. It was clearly a Three-toed Woodpecker. Another lifer!

Dear all,

I have really enjoyed reading about your impressive birding results this year.

As 2014 is coming to an end, I had an enjoyable year birding and realise I will probably not see any new species this year.

Based in Brussels, Belgium I was fortunate to have a number of holiday and work trips this year and saw 177 species, my best year ever (vs. 171 in 2004) and with 65 new species, bringing my life total to 394.

It's a bit ridiculous, but this year I was fortunate enough to bird in: Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, the USA, Malta, UK, Liechtenstein, Italy, France and Norway.

I really should have seen even more birds ...

Here's to 2015 !!
