Hi all,

Looking forward to another good birding year, with new lifers and some good local rarities. My best year was 2004 with 171 birds when I lived in Namibia.

Between my work/private travel I hope to get above 200 for the year. Here's hoping!

I saw a very familiar bird on Sunday after driving back from my son's football practice. But remarkably a bird I've never seen in Belgium. As the winter is quite mild and the sky stormy we've been seeing lots of birds this January here in Brussels.

This morning I spent an hour at sunrise on Zurich Lake and saw thousands of birds, including lots of Red-crested pochards.

Common Gull (New Switzerland lifer)

Driving from Zurich to Klosters I saw quite a few birds of prey from the car but I no positive i.d.'s. Then hiking in Klosters the mountains for an hour, I saw only one single bird, a Grey Heron. Hopefully more luck tomorrow as there are plenty of woodpeckers and owls here.
