How many species of owl have you seen (4 Viewers)

Well your all very lucky, I aint seen one yet since I became a birder at beginning of this year! Thought I saw a Tawny but alas was a stump of a branch in a tree....woo....only gunna make it more special when I get em though.

You will eventually and yes those will be some satisfying twitches. Owls are always so tough to see and we have all seen the "false stump owl"- good to check those because one of those is bound to be a true owl.

1 little owl - england
2 barn owl - england
3 short eared owl - england
4 long eared owl - england
5 brown hawk owl - singapore
6 ferruginous pygmy owl - mexico

grand total of 6
and if there is anyone out there in london who can point me in the right direction to find the so called more common of the british owls the tawny i would be most grateful

yessss make that 7 saw my 1st tawny owl today

Added Dusky Eagle Owl in April, Sooty Owl and Papuan Boobook in May, total now 89. Hoping for Rufous Owl in July...

Alan,

Great photos on Surfbirds, Palawan Scops is mega!

Got great views of Morepork in NZ and both Blakiston's and Ural Owl in Japan so now on 86, some way to go to match your 114!

Rob

41 so far....but have managed 6 species in one day in the UK - Scops, Eagle, Tawny, Barn, Short-eared and Little. Anyone managed more??

Like many others, my Owl list only comprises the 5 UK sp.
Long Eared
Short Eared
Tawny
Barn
Little

Out of all of them my favourites to watch are Short Eared and Little Owls. I hardly look twice at a Barn Owl, what a heathen I am!

Mine is less. The Irish species...Barn, Little and Short-Eared. I´ve seen Tawny too, in England. But last Sunday, I added Snowy Owl by driving with the kids to twitch the Belmullet bird!:king: Stunning bird, she is.

My British owl list is really appalling, probably because of my geographical location, where they don't seem to be so common. The only species of owl I have seen in the UK is the Tawny Owl. I am yet to see any others, which is really disappointing. In fact, I have seen more owls abroad than I have in the UK, having seen both Verreaux's and Spotted Eagle Owl in South Africa. I hope to improve when it comes to seeing owls, as frankly I have hardly seen any.

Any luck with the owlet Alan?

No. Not a sniff - I think Frank and Nick got (very) lucky! I'll have to go back...

Did get another two new Clements Owls - Koepcke's Screech and Cinnamon Screech - which were both nice.

Morepork in November? Any good sites on South Island?

Cheers
a

Now 114 - Palawan Scops Owl & Mantanani Scops Owl - both added in Palawan unsurprisingly! December 2008. Photos on surfbirds when I get back.

cheers, alan

Now 118 with a Clements recount and the two new Megascops. Plenty more to look for including a bag load seen by Mr Hutchinson.

Cheers, alan

Stewart Island is supposed to be good but didn't try there. Did see them at Bullock Creek (Great Spotted Kiwi site) as well as awesome views of the kiwi!
Heard them at Okarito, which is a must for the kiwi - one of the most entertaining nights out you'll ever have!
Also saw them roosting during the day on Tiritiri and Kerikeri, both on North Island.

Great views of Rufous Owl in Darwin and Southern Boobook brings me to 91. Hoping for some good ones in South Africa over Christmas.

Anyone got any suggestions on good places to try for Cape Eagle Owl?

Also add Bornean Frogmouth last week.... finally! after so much searching, just need Dulit now to complete the froggies

that is a nice list unfortunately there are very few owls where i live now but when i was in oregon they were much more common probably only seen 5 different kinds and that counts travel as well

Just 13 ! unlucky for some!

In Uk :-

Barn Owl easiest places North Norfolk like off Lady Anne's Drive near Wells, or Warham's Green, north lincs coast like just inland of donna nook, and any local spot where you know they are. Also seen dark-breasted birds.
Short-Eared Owl again easy in winter at places like Gayton Sands, dee estuary, or on many moorland areas with effort.
Long-Eared Owl more localised but with effort & a little knowledge quite easy at Park Hall CP, Stoke, or Cannock Chase.
Tawny Owl commonest but hardest. Cheshire countryside can be easiest I have found, on roads approaching Audlem for example.
Little Owl used to be regular at Belvide Res, found them too on lower approaches to North Staffs Moors.
Scop's Owl saw bird in tree and in flight in Oxfordshire a couple of years back. Mediocre views though.
Snowy Owl oil-stained ship assisted immature male seen on ground at Trimley Marshes, felixstowe. Gorgeous immature female seen up on North Cornwall moors this year. Not seen one in flight though.
Eagle Owl 2 adults and 3 wild-born juveniles seen on North Lancs Moors near Dunsop Bridge. Very close encounter with angry female.

ABROAD

Great Horned Owl saw family of 4 in trees approaching Reifel Bird Sanctuary, near Vancouver, Canada several years ago.
Great Grey Owl magnificent adult female seen superbly on nest near Oulu, Finland this year.
Pygmy Owl adult male seen on top of pine at same location as above - Oulu area,
Tengmalm's Owl female popped head & shoulders out of nest box at Oulu.
Ural Owl glimpsed adult female through slot in nestbox at Oulu. Could i/d bird from views but very restricted view.

My list is sad...

Great-horned Owl
Eastern-screech Owl
Barred Owl

And I have seen Saw-whets being banded before but I don't think it counts.

wow some of the owl lists on here are incredible!

Here is my meager collection:

Most seen in Ohio/Massachussettes

Eastern screech owl
Barred owl
Great horned owl
Long eared owl
Short eared owl
Snowy owl
Little owl (Italy)

I've had bad luck with owls in general, having dipped on elf and ferruginous pygmy this year in Texas, and a hawk owl last winter. Saw-whet owl continues to be my number 1 nemesis bird...

If I were to accept all the dodgy splits in the latest edition of the Owls book by Koenig and Weick, then I have recently cracked 50. Total list by that taxonomy is 52 seen and another 7 heard.

I have seen Short eared Owl at Punta Arenas, Chile (53 degrees south) and at Varanger Fjord in Norway (70 degrees north) which must be some sort of a record.

HOLY COW that's amazing compared to my list which comprises of :

Barred Owl
Great-horned Owl
o:D

The Barreds we saw in Florida and there were two of them. They just sat there and watched us! That was really a treat. Maybe my greatest birding moment ever.
