A moth worth photographing at last - and a complete lifer to boot - in the trap this morning. I saw it fly in about 11.20 last night and was hoping it had not found its way out again. Still a scarce species in northern Leicestershire but records are increasing as the species spreads north, and in fact two other locals had their first records last night as well !

I nearly didn't bother trapping Thursday night, thought it might rain (it didn't). Very glad I risked it, given I bagged no fewer than 5 garden ticks and a further 7 year ticks in a catch of over 50 moths of over 30 species.
Broad-barred White, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Pine Carpet, Vestal and Burnished Brass were the ticks.
Dingy Shears, Common Footman, Wormwood Pug, Yellow-tail, Purple Clay, Plain Golden Y & Buff Arches were the year ticks.
Alder Moth, Ghost Moth, Coronet, Scorched Wing & two Bordered Whites best of the rest.

This morning I went along to Holland Park, getting close to London's west-end to view the results of an overnight run trap. Many of the micros were ignored & no count of individual species, but included the Following;

My best catch of the year so far this morning, with 76 of 30.
Eight NFY:
Endotricha flammealis (only had two before, both last year)
Box Moth
Single-dotted Wave
Double-striped Pug
Yellow-tail (my earliest by 8 days)
Clay
Light Arches
Small Angle Shades
Commonest was Uncertain with 16 followed by Heart + Dart 8.

A splendid Puss Moth was an excellent best of a pretty fair bunch this morning, never seen one before. Coxcomb Prominent & Nutmeg were year ticks, Buff-tip, a couple of Ele Hawks and a Kitten provided some attractive support. I took the Kitten to be a Sallow when I first saw it bleary-eyed at four this morning, but on closer (and more alert) inspection after work I'm beginning to suspect it's my first Poplar. Also a real scene-stealing turn by a Great Diving Beetle, hauling itself menacingly round the patio!

I’ve only ever recorded Puss Moth and Sallow Kitten once each apiece over c15 years, both stunners! 👍
