June 2022 Moths (1 Viewer)

A meagre 7 of 8 for my yesterday. That one of the 8 was a rather fine female Ghost Moth was a bonus though, with Double Square-spot the other year tick.

Having often read in Lewingtons (can come to light in numbers) against various species, but never ever having had the experience until this am…37 of 7, with 26 Blotched Emeralds.😮

I have never had even one so your 26 is impressive. Looking at the maps I could catch one with a bit of luck but no oak woods anywhere near me.

It's Peach Blossom season again. Better yet, my second Sandy Carpet for the garden. Those along with Freyer's Pug & Clouded Border bring the garden macro year list to 100, two days later than last year.

Just watering my pots in the garden this morning & encountered a Yellow Shell (common in the garden), Straw Dot (garden first but seen them out & about in recent days) & a Cinnabar.

Last year had several Cinnabar larvae for the first time in the garden on a single Ragwort plant. Had to bring in more of the plant to keep them going as the original plant started to die. The individual this morning is resting & by the original plant so suspect this is one that successfully pupated.

Had c38 of 23 last night to include-

A meagre showing of half a dozen Heart and Dart, 2 Middle barred Minor and single Box Moth, Riband Wave, Rustic and Green Pug. Rural Surrey tonight so hoping for an improvement on that.

29 of 13 this am (NELondon) with a couple of the best.👍

I missed the best night (Thursday) due to being unable to commit to sorting out the catch on Friday morning but was quite satisfied with my catch this morning. Only 41/22 but a garden tick (Beautiful Golden Y) and what seems to me to look fine for a lifer micro Dichroramphana petiverella (but there are very few VC55 records and it might need gen det confirmation), plus six others NFY including Middle-barred Minor, Buff Ermine, Angle Shades, Common Wainscot and Large Yellow Underwing.

Second ever Grass Rivulet this morning, and a bunch of year ticks, including Miller, Grey/Dark Dagger, Mottled Rustic, Dingy Shell, Straw Dot, V-Pug, Light Emerald & Common Wave. Coronet, Alder Moth & 4 Elephant Hawks also noteworthy.

Small Argent and Sable at Ariundle NNR this afternoon (and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, but the Chequered Skippers seem to have gone over, none around despite very good weather).

Common Marbled Carpet (4)
Leopard Moth
Foxglove Pug
Common Lutestring (2)
Buff Ermine
Brimstone Moth
Lobster Moth (2)
Swallowtail Moth
Vestal
Great Oak Beauty
Rustic/Uncertain
Lackey
Heart and Club (3)
Heart and Dart (2)
Small Magpie
Middle barred Minor

Willow Beauty (5)
Straw Dot

It was a micro that stole the show on Sunday night, a Scarce Light Plume, quite a rare migrant. I managed to fumble potting it to enable better photos, but fortunately managed to get a shot in situ at the bottom of the trap. It's not a Striped Hawk-moth, but I'll take it! New for year macros consisted of Fan-foot, Dark Arches & Common White Wave.

And at work today a feeding Hummingbird Hawk-moth paused on a leaf long enough for a few pics with my phone.

Just back from Islay, I didn't have a trap with me, and the winds were a bit strong for trapping anyway. I saw a few Silver-ground Carpets whilst out and about. However, the ladies toilet in Bridgend yielded a couple of decent moths. On one day, 2 White Ermine, a worn Buff Ermine and my first ever Heart & Dart! A couple of days later there was a pristine Buff Ermine. My husband didn't find any moths in the gents, but a couple of years ago on a late October visit, he'd found a December Moth in the gents.

I have found camp site toilet blocks to be excellent places to find good moths. 👍

And that, your honour, is the case for the defence..... ;)
