Mallorca 2015 (1 Viewer)

Thanks for all of that info Martin, we spotted a yellow butterfly this afternoon too - clouded yellow sprung to mind.

Paul

Hi Paul
Certainly possible but only if it had dark borders to the wings, the other possibility would be a Cleopatra (very similar to our Brimstone).
Best wishes
Martin

Hi Pep
Even with June temperatures, that's dedication. I wish I had the energy!
Best wishes
Martin

I had promised 3 friends to show them the rock thrush; we havent seen it, but they were more happy with the 2 spectacled warblersm really scarce in Majorca, we have begun to 6.30 am but at the end it was really warm

Still lots about to keep us all happy, Little terns, a few Red-footed falcons and the Egyptian vulture still being seen on and off at Salobrar. Mike

Managed to see a Hoopoe before we left Majorca yesterday evening as we spotted one from the taxi as we drove out of Camp De Mar. I would have been most disappointed if we had come home without seeing one!

Can't wait for the next visit, though I hope I can come at a better time of the year! In the meantime, I will have to be satisfied with this thread,

cheers Paul

A Black stork has been seen today around Albufera, also the hardy Pep climbed up the highest mountain here and found a nesting pair of Spectacled warblers. He also saw Rock thrush, rather him than me in this heat. I hope he posts the photos on here, both stunning birds to see. Mike

Just returned from brief trip to S'Albufera. Usual suspects seen. Unusual birds seen CASPIAN TERN sat on island at back of pool from Sa Roca hide on 29 June, 3 Avocets and 1 Black-tailed Godwit at the salinas.

Today I have had lot of luck with the black stork, i just arrived to Depuradora and she was leaving the Albufera, getting more and more high and then flight toward the center of the island. I guess she sleeps at s'Albufera and when the thermical are heat, she leaves s'Albufera to the flat areas of Majorca to eat, the picture is very bad, the b. stork was very, very far and the heat was terrible, but it is useful to identify it.

I put also 2 pictures of the rock thrush, just i the maximum top of the Puig Major, besides de radar; I uploaded 2 pictures of the spectacled warbler, breading up the Tramuntana. There were also several wheatear breading there and in the other highest mountains

Thank you Mike! :t:

I was brave enough to venture onto the Central Plain but not much doing in this heatwave, one Red kite and a Kestrel, a few Quail and some young Woodchats.
I had my Birdforum account hacked by some "friends" who have been pulling my leg mercilessly about a Blue Crested Hoopoe so if you read anything about this it was not my post!! It was not funny either. Mike

Sorry for the poor quality yet again, I may get the hang of it one day, but I am not sure what this is, there were lots of them so probably quite common. Mike

Hi Mike
That's a Vestal, Rhodometra sacraria, a day-flying geometrid moth that is farly common on the island. It even occurs here in the UK as a migrant.
Best wishes
Martin

Wasp

Hello, can you help me with this wasp?

It was the palma airport area, and the nest was this hole, there were at least 2 (or more) entring the hole.

Many thanks Martin, as usual. One day I hope I can find something more exciting for you. It's great having an alternative interest in these bird starved months, there were so many butterflies there too, it really is an excellent site. If I could get a portable moth trap I could have a go there. Hope you can help Pep with his wasp! Mike

Hi Mike
I hope so too although all are of interest. Birding here has also dried up so I'm also relying on moths (and butterflies) to provide added interest. We did have a Green Sand the other day, which is rather unusual at this time of year.
Regarding Pep's bee sp., I've asked two of my TAIB friends to have a look at the picture and I hope they come back with a determination. I expect it will be a species of Halictus (of which there are seven species on Mallorca) but I'll leave it to the experts.
Best wishes
Martin

Many thanks as always Martin, still in a heatwave here but good displays of Bee-eaters, Eleanora's falcons and Nightjars. I think you mentioned a portable moth trap, is there one you could recommend? I would love to give these hot balmy evenings a go, the night air seems alive with moths and insects. Mike
