Overview

A wooded valley close to the north coast of Devon, this reserve contains a mixture of tree species although the original woodland was Oak. After extensive replanting in the 19th century and later there are now Douglas Fir, Beech and Southern Beech, Western Hemlock and Norway Spruce.

Notable Species

At only 14 acres this is a very small reserve but has a good range of breeding birds including all three British woodpeckers, Eurasian Nuthatch and Common Treecreeper, Common Redstart and flycatchers. Common Buzzard and Eurasian Sparrowhawk both breed and Northern Raven is frequently seen on the surrounding farmland, where Northern Lapwing and Eurasian Curlew are common in winter.

Chapel Wood is situated near the village of Georgeham and reached on the A361 Barnstaple-Ilfracombe road, turning left towards Spreacombe 3km north of Braunton.
