Creepy-crawly skyscraper

As we drove along the road up Austinville Valley, I spotted this huge termite mound.

OK it's not so big as the 'magnetic' ones seen further north, but it was still big, and right beside the road too.

I'd already seen quite a few and they still fascinated me, as we get nothing like this over here.

Quite amazing.

Do all the termites inside eat the trees surrounding them? You can answer me here and I'll check back.

You know, I'm really not sure. I know there is a/some species that are very destructive to houses out there and will eat all the wooden parts. Can be an absolute nightmare (ask Ken). Whether these are that type, I don't know.

In South Carolina, that's an anthill and they love to tear you up when you cut the grass. A course's not as big as that mountain for laughing out loud. Thanks kid-o.
